How to shed burdens in daily Christian life?
How can we "lay aside every encumbrance" in our daily Christian walk?

Running the Race: Hebrews 12:1

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.”

Setting the Scene

• The Christian life is pictured as a long–distance race, not a sprint.

• We run in full view of past “witnesses” (Hebrews 11) who proved God faithful.

• The call is two-fold: throw off hindrances and keep running with endurance.

Identify the Encumbrances

Not every weight is blatant sin; some are simply unnecessary burdens.

• Unconfessed sin – guilt, shame, secret habits (Psalm 32:3-5; 1 John 1:9).

• Distractions – media overload, misplaced priorities, constant busyness (Luke 10:40-42).

• Unhealthy relationships – influences that cool zeal for Christ (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Emotional baggage – bitterness, worry, fear (Ephesians 4:31; Philippians 4:6-7).

• Self-reliance – pride that resists daily dependence on the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Why Lay Them Aside?

• They slow spiritual progress and sap joy.

• They blur our focus on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).

• They rob God of the glory He deserves through a fruitful life (John 15:8).

Practical Steps to Throw Off the Weight

1. Examine

• Ask the Spirit to spotlight anything hindering your pace (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Keep a journal; patterns emerge when pains and pleasures are recorded.

2. Confess and Repent

• Name the encumbrance specifically to God (1 John 1:9).

• Turn from it; replace it with obedience (Ephesians 4:22-24).

3. Replace with Better Loads

• Hide Scripture in your heart (Psalm 119:11).

• Choose thoughts that lift, not weigh down (Philippians 4:8).

• Serve others—shifting focus off self (Galatians 5:13).

4. Establish Disciplines

• Daily time in the Word and prayer—non-negotiable fueling stops.

• Regular fasting or media breaks—shedding non-essential bulk.

• Structured generosity—loosening the grip of material weight (2 Corinthians 9:7).

5. Walk in Community

• Invite accountability; “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17).

• Gather consistently with believers (Hebrews 10:24-25).

6. Fix Eyes on Jesus

• He ran first and finished (Hebrews 12:2).

• He supplies strength and sets the pace (Isaiah 40:31).

7. Persevere with Eternal Perspective

• Discipline the body like a runner aiming for the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

• Remember the joy set before you—an unshakable kingdom (Hebrews 12:28).

Daily Checklist

□ What weight am I sensing today?

□ Have I confessed known sin?

□ Is my schedule aligned with kingdom priorities?

□ Am I feeding on Scripture more than on screens?

□ Who is cheering me on, and whom am I encouraging?

Encouragement to Keep Moving

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:24-25)

Throw off the unnecessary. Keep your eyes on the finish line. Run free.
