How to speak freely about our faith?
What practical steps can we take to avoid being silenced about our faith?

Setting the Scene

Acts 4:17 sets the tension: “But to stop this message from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”

From the start of the church, authorities have tried to muzzle the gospel. The apostles refused, and so can we.

Recognize the Pressure

• Culture still issues subtle (and not-so-subtle) warnings: “Keep faith private.”

• Identifying the pressure removes surprise and prepares us to respond.

Practical Steps to Keep Speaking

1. Anchor Your Convictions

Acts 4:20—“For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

• Know what God has done for you; conviction fuels courage.

2 Timothy 1:12—Paul was “convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him.”

2. Ask for Boldness Daily

Acts 4:29—“And now, Lord, consider their threats and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness.”

• Boldness is not personality; it is a Spirit-given strength (Ephesians 6:19-20).

3. Stay Filled with the Spirit

Acts 4:31—“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

• Regular confession, worship, and Scripture intake keep us responsive to His leading.

4. Obey God over Human Approval

Acts 5:29—“We must obey God rather than men.”

• Decide ahead of time whose “well done” matters most (Matthew 10:32-33).

5. Cultivate a Supportive Community

Acts 4:23—After being threatened, Peter and John “went back to their own people.”

• Small groups, prayer partners, and church family reinforce courage.

6. Prepare a Clear, Gentle Defense

1 Peter 3:15—“Always be prepared to give a defense… with gentleness and respect.”

• Write out your testimony in three minutes.

• Memorize a handful of gospel verses (Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-10).

7. Live a Consistent Witness

Philippians 2:15—“Shine as lights in the world.”

• Integrity gives credibility; hypocrisy hands opponents a gag order.

8. Use Wisdom and Grace in Speech

Colossians 4:5-6—“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.”

• Tone matters; gracious boldness opens ears that harshness closes.

9. Expect Opposition, Rejoice Anyway

2 Timothy 3:12—“Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

• Opposition is confirmation, not failure (Matthew 5:11-12).

10. Keep Eternity in View

Romans 8:18—Present sufferings can’t compare with coming glory.

Revelation 21:4—One day every tear is wiped away; that promise steadies trembling voices.

Putting It All Together

Daily choose Spirit-empowered boldness, grounded in Scripture, supported by community, expressed with grace. When culture says, “Be silent,” Scripture still says, “Proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).

How can Acts 4:17 inspire us to prioritize God's commands over human threats?
