How can we prepare spiritually for trials described in Revelation 9:9? Seeing the Picture in Revelation 9:9 “ ‘They had breastplates like iron, and the sound of their wings was like the roar of many chariots rushing into battle.’ ” (Revelation 9:9) John’s vision depicts a terrifying, literal wave of demonic tormentors unleashed in the last days. Their iron breastplates and deafening advance shout one message: a hard, relentless trial is coming. Scripture prepares us—not to escape all hardship, but to stand firm in it. Why God Tells Us in Advance • To stir holy sobriety—“Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7) • To move us to repentance—“See, I have told you in advance.” (Matthew 24:25) • To anchor courage—“So that no one will be unsettled by these trials. For you know we are destined for them.” (1 Thessalonians 3:3) Foundations for Spiritual Readiness 1. Unshakeable allegiance to Christ • Revelation shows judgment against those without God’s seal (Revelation 9:4). Ensure you belong to Him. • “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5) 2. Daily saturation in Scripture • Trials expose heart vacancies; Scripture fills them with truth. • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Colossians 3:16) 3. Persistent, Spirit‐led prayer • Communal and private prayer strengthen watchfulness (Luke 21:36). • “Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer.” (Ephesians 6:18) Putting On the Armor Now Paul’s armor list (Ephesians 6:10-18) meets John’s vision head-on. Replace the locusts’ iron breastplates with God’s armor: • Belt of truth—defends against deception when chaos reigns. • Breastplate of righteousness—guards the heart when fear strikes. • Shoes of gospel peace—keeps us moving instead of paralyzed. • Shield of faith—extinguishes fiery lies about God’s goodness. • Helmet of salvation—protects the mind from despair. • Sword of the Spirit—God’s Word cuts through terror. Cultivating Endurance Before the Storm • Practice fasting: disciplines appetites so panic won’t rule (Matthew 6:16-18). • Memorize key promises: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” (Isaiah 43:2) • Serve now: love expressed in action trains the heart for sacrificial faith (Galatians 5:13). Staying Oriented When Judgment Falls • Remember God limits the enemy’s reach (Revelation 9:5). • Know the time is fixed—five months, not one day longer (Revelation 9:10). • Keep eternity in view—temporal torment versus everlasting glory (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). Encouragement from Past Saints • Job sat in ashes yet declared, “I know that my Redeemer lives.” (Job 19:25) • Daniel’s friends faced a furnace believing, “The God we serve is able…and He will rescue us.” (Daniel 3:17) Living Alert, Not Afraid • The Judge who sends the locusts is the Shepherd who laid down His life (John 10:11). • His wrath is righteous; His protection sure. “God did not appoint us to wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9) Checklist for Today □ Repent of known sin. □ Renew trust in Christ’s finished work. □ Read Revelation 9 aloud; ask the Spirit to impress its urgency. □ Review the armor, piece by piece. □ Encourage another believer; strengthen the ranks. Standing ready now means standing victorious then. |
