How to stay faithful like Zechariah?
In what ways can we remain faithful amidst challenging circumstances like Zechariah?

Setting the scene

“ ‘In the time of Herod king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Aaron.’ ” (Luke 1:5)

Oppressive ruler. National unrest. Personal heartbreak over decades of childlessness. Yet Zechariah remained at his post, faithful to God. How can we do the same?

Live blamelessly, even when dreams are unmet

Luke 1:6 records that Zechariah and Elizabeth “were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.”

• Staying obedient in the mundane keeps our hearts soft (Psalm 119:1–2).

Hebrews 10:36—“You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive the promise.”

Persist in prayer when answers delay

• The angel says, “Your prayer has been heard” (Luke 1:13). Evidently Zechariah never stopped asking.

1 Thessalonians 5:17—“Pray without ceasing.”

Philippians 4:6-7—persistent prayer ushers in God’s peace while we wait.

Serve faithfully where God assigns you

• Zechariah “was serving as priest before God… according to the custom of the priesthood” (Luke 1:8-9).

• Ordinary duty became the setting for an extraordinary encounter.

1 Corinthians 15:58—“be steadfast… abounding in the work of the Lord.”

Guard your words—choose faith over doubt

• Zechariah’s question in Luke 1:18 exposes lingering unbelief and costs him nine months of silence (1:20).

Proverbs 18:21—“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Psalm 19:14—ask God to make every word pleasing to Him.

Humble yourself under God’s timing

• Nine months of enforced silence gave Zechariah space to ponder God’s purposes.

1 Peter 5:6-7—humble yourselves “under God’s mighty hand” and cast all anxieties on Him.

Ecclesiastes 3:11—He makes everything beautiful in its time.

Turn fear into worship

Luke 1:12—Zechariah was “troubled, and fear fell upon him.”

• By Luke 1:64-67, that fear has become exuberant praise: “Immediately his mouth was opened… and he began to bless God.”

Psalm 56:3—“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

Share the testimony to strengthen others

• Neighbors heard and “laid them up in their hearts” (Luke 1:65-66).

Revelation 12:11—overcoming comes “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

Acts 1:8—our stories of God’s faithfulness point others to Jesus.

Keep your eyes fixed on Christ

• Zechariah’s prophetic song (Luke 1:67-79) centers on the coming Messiah.

Hebrews 12:2—“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

Galatians 6:9—do not grow weary; the harvest is coming.

Putting it together

Remain obedient. Pray persistently. Serve faithfully. Speak faith, wait humbly, worship boldly, testify openly, and focus on Christ. In every challenge, the God who answered Zechariah will prove Himself faithful to you.
