How to tell true wisdom from worldly?
In what ways can we discern true wisdom from worldly wisdom today?

Reading the Text

“ For what advantage has the wise man over the fool? What does the poor man gain by knowing how to conduct himself before others? ” (Ecclesiastes 6:8)

Defining Wisdom—Heaven’s Standard vs. Earth’s

• Scriptural wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).

• Worldly wisdom: “This wisdom is earthly, unspiritual, demonic” (James 3:15).

• Key contrast: one begins with reverence for God; the other begins and ends with self.

Why Discernment Matters

Ecclesiastes 6:8 asks what advantage the wise truly possess; without God, none.

1 Corinthians 3:19—“The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”

• Our choices flow from the counsel we trust; misplacing trust costs eternity (Matthew 7:24-27).

Marks of True Wisdom

• Anchored in Scripture (Psalm 19:7-8).

• Produces purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, good fruits, impartiality, sincerity (James 3:17).

• Exalts Christ and depends on the Spirit (John 16:13-14).

• Bears the fruit of obedience (John 14:21).

• Endures testing and time (Matthew 7:20).

Signs of Worldly Wisdom

• Elevates human acclaim, credentials, or innovation over revelation (Colossians 2:8).

• Appeals to pride, envy, selfish ambition (James 3:14).

• Measures success by comfort, status, or profit (Luke 12:16-21).

• Shifts with cultural winds (Ephesians 4:14).

• Lacks lasting righteousness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17).

Practical Steps to Discern

1. Examine the Source

– Does it align with the whole counsel of God (Acts 17:11)?

2. Test the Fruit

– Look for holiness and love (Galatians 5:22-23).

3. Seek the Fear of the LORD

– Cultivate reverence through prayerful Scripture intake (Psalm 119:11).

4. Listen to the Spirit-filled Church

– Submit insights to mature believers (Proverbs 11:14).

5. Watch the Outcomes

– Worldly wisdom breeds confusion; godly wisdom yields peace (James 3:16-18).

Walking It Out Today

• In conversations: prefer biblical counsel to trending opinions.

• In media consumption: filter messages through Philippians 4:8.

• In decision-making: ask, “Will this deepen my obedience to Christ?”

• In ambitions: pursue “well done, good and faithful servant” over applause (Matthew 25:21).
