How to test our work for God's will?
How can we "test our own work" to ensure it aligns with God's will?

Guiding Verse

“Each one should test his own work, and then he will have reason to boast in himself alone, and not in someone else.” (Galatians 6:4)

What Testing Looks Like

Testing carries the idea of careful examination—laying our actions, motives, and results beside the unchanging standard of God’s Word and the character of Christ.

Standards to Measure By

• The revealed will of God in Scripture (Romans 12:2)

• The example and teaching of Jesus (Colossians 3:17)

• The inner witness of the Spirit confirmed by the Word (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

• The observable fruit that endures (Matthew 7:17)

Four Heart Checks

• Alignment: Ask whether the work agrees with clear biblical commands (James 1:22).

• Motive: Look for love for God and neighbor rather than self-promotion (1 Corinthians 16:14).

• Dependence: Note whether reliance rests on the Spirit, not mere talent (John 15:5).

• Fruit: Seek results that glorify God and build others up (Ephesians 2:10).

Daily Practices for Honest Self-Assessment

• Quiet reflection with open Bible, allowing verses to expose attitudes (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Regular confession, keeping short accounts with God (1 John 1:9).

• Fellowship and accountability, inviting trusted believers to speak truth in love (Proverbs 27:17).

• Journaling blessings and corrections noted by the Spirit, then adjusting course accordingly.

• Continual thanksgiving, keeping the focus on God’s grace rather than personal performance (Colossians 3:17).

Warning Signs and Pitfalls

• Comparing achievements with others instead of Scripture (Galatians 6:4b).

• Excusing sin because the outcome seems successful.

• Serving while neglecting personal obedience and devotion (Luke 10:40-42).

• Growing pride that resists further correction.

The Joy of Pleasing God

When work stands approved, inner rejoicing rises—not in self-glory, but in grateful recognition that God allowed participation in His purposes (Galatians 6:4; 1 Corinthians 15:10).

Encouragement to Keep Going

Press on in the grace that saves and sustains, holding every task, plan, and ambition to the light of Scripture, confident “that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
