How to thank church servants?
In what ways can we show gratitude to those who serve the church?

Understanding the Example in Romans 16:4

Romans 16:3-4: “Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.”

Paul models open, heartfelt appreciation. He names faithful servants, describes their sacrifice, and invites the whole church to share in thankfulness.

Why Gratitude Matters

Hebrews 6:10: “For God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints…”

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13: “Acknowledge those who work among you… esteem them very highly in love because of their work.”

Gratitude reflects God’s own memory of faithful service and fosters unity, encouragement, and perseverance.

Practical Ways to Express Gratitude

Verbal Affirmation

• Speak specific words of thanks after sermons, lessons, visits, or behind-the-scenes service.

Proverbs 25:11 pictures well-timed words as “apples of gold in settings of silver.”

Public Acknowledgment

• Share testimonies in gatherings, newsletters, or social media, following Paul’s example of naming servants.

1 Corinthians 16:18: “Therefore acknowledge such men.”

Material Support

Galatians 6:6: “The one who receives instruction in the word must share in all good things with his instructor.”

1 Timothy 5:17-18 urges generous, honorable compensation for those who labor in preaching and teaching.

Acts of Service

• Offer to watch children, prepare meals, handle errands, or help with home projects.

Matthew 10:42: even a cup of cold water given in Jesus’ name is noted by God.

Prayer Covering

• Regularly lift leaders and volunteers to the Lord by name (Ephesians 6:19-20).

• Send a quick note: “I prayed Colossians 1:9-12 for you today.”

Hospitality

• Open your table and home, as Lydia did for Paul (Acts 16:15).

• 3 John 5-8 commends those who “send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.”

Encouraging Letters or Messages

Philippians 1:3-5 shows Paul writing to thank partners who shared from day one.

• A thoughtful card on an anniversary or tough week can refresh a weary servant.

Celebrating Milestones

• Recognize ordinations, ministry anniversaries, mission returns, or completed projects with a joyful gathering.

Partnership in Ministry

• Volunteer alongside them; shoulder part of the load (Philippians 4:3).

• Your presence says, “We’re in this together.”

Heart Attitudes Behind Gratitude

• Humility—seeing others’ sacrifices as gifts to the whole body (Romans 12:3-5).

• Generosity—giving freely as stewards of God’s grace (2 Corinthians 9:11).

• Constancy—making gratitude an ongoing habit, not a one-time event (Hebrews 13:7).

Blessings That Flow from Gratitude

• Encouraged servants keep serving with joy (2 Timothy 1:16-18).

• The church family grows in love and mutual care (Ephesians 4:16).

• God receives glory as His people mirror His own faithful remembrance (Philippians 4:17-19).

Let’s follow Paul’s pattern, intentionally thanking those who risk, labor, teach, pray, and give for the gospel—so every servant hears the church echo: “We are grateful to you.”
