How to trust God in tough times?
In what ways can we trust God amidst overwhelming challenges in our lives?

Setting the Scene: Israel’s Overwhelming Oppression

“ For the Midianites came up with their livestock and tents like swarms of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable; and they entered the land to ravage it.” – Judges 6:5

• Midian’s armies looked unstoppable: countless warriors, endless camels, total devastation.

• Israel’s resources were stripped, their morale crushed, their future seemingly erased.

Seeing the Challenge for What It Is

• Scripture does not downplay hardship; it names it honestly (Psalm 22:1–2; 2 Corinthians 1:8).

• God allowed Israel to feel the full weight of oppression so they would cry out to Him (Judges 6:6–7).

• Our own “locust-like” problems—debt, illness, addictions, hostility—can feel just as innumerable.

Remembering Who God Is

• God hears: “The LORD listened to the voice of Israel.” (Judges 6:7)

• God speaks: “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.” (Judges 6:12)

• God acts: “Surely I will be with you, and you will strike down the Midianites as one man.” (Judges 6:16)

Ways We Can Trust God Today

• Acknowledge the size of the battle, yet magnify the greatness of God (Psalm 34:3).

• Recall His past deliverances—both biblical and personal (Psalm 77:11–12).

• Cling to His unbreakable promises:

– “Do not fear, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10)

– “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5–6)

• Obey the next clear step, however small (Judges 6:25–27).

• Refuse to measure victory by numbers or strength; measure by God’s word (1 Samuel 14:6; Zechariah 4:6).

• Lean on the body of Christ; Gideon’s ten servants helped him (Judges 6:27; Galatians 6:2).

• Worship in advance; Gideon built an altar before the battle was won (Judges 6:24; Philippians 4:6–7).

Encouraging Examples from Scripture

• Jehoshaphat surrounded: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” (2 Chronicles 20:12)

• Hezekiah’s letter from Assyria: spread before the LORD, who answered mightily (2 Kings 19:14–35).

• Paul’s thorn: strength perfected in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9–10).

• Peter walking on water: focus on Jesus, not the waves (Matthew 14:28–31).

Steps Forward in Faith

• Identify the “Midian” in your life.

• Replace fearful self-talk with God’s covenant words.

• Act in obedience, no matter how limited your resources appear.

• Celebrate every evidence of His faithfulness—small victories herald larger ones.

When challenges swarm like locusts, trust grows by fixing our eyes on the One who is bigger than the innumerable and who has never lost a battle.
