How to trust God's deliverance?
What actions can we take to trust God's deliverance as shown in Jeremiah 51:34?

Setting the Scene

“ ‘Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me; he has left me like an empty vessel. He has swallowed me like a monster; he has filled his belly with my delicacies, and has spewed me out.’ ” (Jeremiah 51:34)

Babylon’s cruelty seemed absolute, yet the surrounding passage promises that God will overthrow that same oppressor. In the middle of hurt, Israel could still trust God’s coming rescue. So can we.

Recognize the Devourer

• Call bondage what it is—cruel, consuming, and contrary to God’s will (v. 34)

• Refuse to romanticize evil systems or habits that “swallow” us (John 10:10)

Name the Pain Honestly

• Jeremiah records Israel’s raw lament; we, too, can pour out unfiltered sorrow (Psalm 62:8)

• Honesty before God prevents bitterness and opens space for faith

Anchor Your Heart in God’s Promises

• Read the wider context—God vows to “repay Babylon” (Jeremiah 51:56)

• Memorize parallel assurances:

– “Stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD” (Exodus 14:13)

– “He has delivered us… and He will yet deliver us” (2 Corinthians 1:10)

Keep Short Accounts with the Lord

• Confess any alliance with Babylon-like pride or sin (1 John 1:9)

• Walk in daily repentance so nothing clogs the flow of trust

Detach from the Apparatus that Devours

• Israel needed to leave Babylon physically (Jeremiah 51:6); we may need to leave spiritually or relationally

• Practical steps: end compromising partnerships, delete temptations, change environments

Pray with Expectant Confidence

• Use God’s own words: “LORD, You promised to break the oppressor—do it again.”

• Shift prayers from vague hope to scriptural certainty (Isaiah 55:11)

Watch for Signs of God’s Intervention

• Look for “firstfruits” of deliverance—small turns of favor, weakening of the oppressor

• Celebrate these moments as tokens of the full rescue to come (Psalm 34:4)

Testify and Strengthen Others

• Share stories of deliverance; testimony multiplies faith (Revelation 12:11)

• Encourage the weary: “If God crushed Babylon, He can crush your burden” (Romans 15:4)

Live as the Already-Freed

• Obey boldly, worship joyfully, serve generously—acts that declare, “My Deliverer lives” (Job 19:25)

• Today’s obedience becomes tomorrow’s platform for even greater deliverance
