How to use gifts to edify the church?
How can we ensure our spiritual gifts edify the church, per 1 Corinthians 14:2?

Setting the Stage: Why Edification Matters

• “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

• The Spirit’s purpose in gifting believers is always congregational benefit, never private prestige.

• Chapter 14 keeps repeating one theme: let everything you do “build up the church” (14:12, 26).

Key Insight from 1 Corinthians 14:2

“For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”

• Uninterpreted tongues help only the speaker’s private devotion.

• The verse is a gentle warning: even a genuine gift can miss its target if others cannot grasp it.

• Edification, therefore, hinges on intelligibility—people must understand in order to be built up.

Principles for Making Our Gifts Edifying

• Love first, gifts second (13:1–3). Without love, even spectacular abilities are “nothing.”

• Aim for clarity. If the gift involves speech—teaching, prophecy, or tongues—ensure plain understanding or provide interpretation (14:5, 19).

• Seek the greater good, not personal excitement (14:12).

• Maintain order. “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” (14:33)

• Submit to evaluation by the church (14:29). Authentic gifts welcome accountability.

• Serve in humility, remembering that every ability is received, not earned (Romans 12:3).

• Depend on the Spirit’s fruit—love, joy, peace, etc.—to accompany the Spirit’s gifts (Galatians 5:22-23).

Practical Steps for Today

1. Identify your gift through service, not speculation—needs often reveal calling.

2. Pair your gift with a heart of love by daily abiding in Christ (John 15:5).

3. Ask leaders for guidance on fitting your gift into the body’s current needs.

4. If your gift is verbal, prepare diligently so your words are clear and biblically sound (2 Timothy 2:15).

5. Welcome feedback; refine how you serve so more people are strengthened.

6. Pray for interpretation when tongues are exercised, or choose silence if no interpreter is present (1 Corinthians 14:28).

7. Celebrate other believers’ gifts, fostering a culture where every member supplies what is lacking (Ephesians 4:16).

• Motivated by love, not ego

• Understood by others

• Aligned with Scripture

• Conducted in order

• Welcomed, discerned, and confirmed by the church
