Identify God's leaders in today's church?
How can we discern God's chosen leaders in our church today?

The backdrop: rods on display

“Write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi, for there must be one staff for the head of each tribe.” (Numbers 17:3)

Key idea: God marks His leader

• Twelve staffs looked alike; one carried the name God had chosen.

• The following night, Aaron’s staff budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds (17:8)—visible proof of divine selection.

• God ended the debate: leadership is not a popularity vote; it is a matter of His unmistakable appointment.

Principles for recognizing God-chosen leaders today

• The “name” of Christ is written on them—evident new-covenant inscription on the heart (Jeremiah 31:33; 2 Corinthians 3:2-3).

• Spiritual life springs up around them, as blossoms did around Aaron’s rod (John 15:5).

• Their ministry silences division rather than stirring it (Numbers 17:5; Ephesians 4:3).

• God’s gifting and call are confirmed by others, not self-proclaimed (Acts 13:2-3; 1 Timothy 4:14).

Biblical qualifications to look for

1. Evident character (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9)

– above reproach, faithful in marriage, self-controlled, hospitable, able to teach, not quarrelsome, free from the love of money.

2. Spirit-filled wisdom (Acts 6:3)

– “men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom.”

3. Tested faithfulness over time (1 Corinthians 4:2).

4. Servant-hearted humility patterned after Christ (Mark 10:43-45).

5. Sound doctrine, holding firmly to the trustworthy word (Titus 1:9).

Marks of divine affirmation

• Fruit of the Spirit consistently ripens under their care (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Unity flourishes; grumbling diminishes (Philippians 2:14-15).

• God’s power backs their teaching (1 Thessalonians 1:5).

• Opposition may arise, yet God vindicates (Numbers 16–17; 2 Corinthians 10:18).

Congregational responsibility

• Pray and watch for the “budding staff” signs—life and fruit (Colossians 1:9-10).

• Compare every candidate to Scripture, not trends (Acts 17:11).

• Lay hands suddenly on no one (1 Timothy 5:22); allow time for testing.

• Joyfully submit to proven leaders, making their work a joy (Hebrews 13:17).

Guardrails against counterfeit authority

• Reject teaching that veers from the gospel (Galatians 1:8).

• Beware leaders who exploit rather than shepherd (2 Peter 2:1-3).

• Measure by Christlike service, not charisma (Matthew 7:15-20).

Living it out

When a person’s life, doctrine, and fruit align with Scripture—and the Spirit repeatedly confirms through flourishing ministry and congregational peace—we can, with confidence, recognize that God has written His “name” on that staff and raised up another servant for His church.
