How can we identify and use our spiritual gifts in the church? The Grace-Gift Principle “Now to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” (Ephesians 4:7) Christ Himself measures out a unique portion of grace to every believer. That grace arrives in the form of spiritual gifts—divinely empowered abilities meant to build up His body. If you are in Christ, you already have at least one. What Are Spiritual Gifts? • Supernatural abilities granted by the Holy Spirit for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7). • Rooted in grace, not natural talent alone—though God often channels gifts through natural wiring. • Intended to glorify God, strengthen believers, and advance the gospel (1 Peter 4:10-11). Recognizing Your Gift • Scripture’s primary lists: Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 28-31; Ephesians 4:11; 1 Peter 4:10-11. • Common clues: – Inner desire: a Spirit-sparked passion to meet a need. – Ease and effectiveness: unusual fruit compared with ordinary effort. – Body affirmation: mature believers confirm what they see in you. – Enduring joy: serving in that area energizes you rather than drains you. • Every gift matters; none are optional parts (1 Corinthians 12:14-21). Biblical Examples of Gift Discovery • Bezalel—Spirit-filled craftsmanship for the tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-3). • Barnabas—gift of encouragement; his words steady early believers (Acts 11:24). • Timothy—teaching and leadership stirred up through laying on of hands (2 Timothy 1:6). These accounts show God confirming gifts through calling, community, and commissioning. Four Practical Steps to Discern Your Gift 1. Seek the Giver • Ask the Lord to reveal what He has already placed within you (James 1:5). 2. Study the Word • Meditate on the gift passages; note where your heart “lights up.” 3. Serve Broadly • Volunteer in various ministries; real-life service clarifies gifting faster than surveys. 4. Listen for Feedback & Fruit • Invite honest input; watch where God consistently produces growth in others through you. Putting Gifts into Action • Align with the local church’s mission; gifts flourish in covenant community, not isolation. • Start small yet faithfully—teach one class, visit one shut-in, join one worship rehearsal. • Aim for edification: “Since you are eager for spiritual gifts, seek to excel in gifts that build up the church.” (1 Corinthians 14:12) • Keep honing the gift through study, mentoring, and practice; stewardship requires development (Matthew 25:14-30). Guardrails for Serving • Love is the motive and measure (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). • Humility protects unity—no gift is grounds for boasting (Romans 12:3). • Obedience to Scripture keeps gifting from drifting into self-promotion. Encouragement to Step Out “Fan into flame the gift of God.” (2 Timothy 1:6) Christ’s church needs the portion of grace placed in you. Discover it, develop it, and deploy it so “in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:11). |
