Identify & resist anti-God alliances?
How can we identify and resist alliances against God's purposes today?

The Scene in Joshua 10:3

“Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon,” (Joshua 10:3).

• Five Canaanite kings unite because God’s people have entered the land and forged covenant with Gibeon.

• Their agenda is crystal clear: stop the advance of the Lord’s purposes by overwhelming force.

• The pattern is timeless—whenever God moves, opposition clusters.

Marks of Contemporary Anti-God Alliances

• Shared hostility toward clear biblical morality (Psalm 2:1-3).

• Coordinated pressure to silence gospel proclamation (Acts 4:17-18, 27-28).

• Legislation or cultural trends insisting that believers compromise convictions (Daniel 3:4-6; 6:7).

• Philosophies that redefine truth, marriage, life, or justice apart from Scripture (Romans 1:22-25).

• Ecumenical or interfaith partnerships that blur the exclusive Lordship of Christ (2 Corinthians 6:14-16).

Recognizing the Real Battle

• “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against… the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12).

• Human alliances are fronts for unseen powers; discernment requires spiritual eyesight (1 John 4:1).

• Hostile coalitions cannot ultimately touch God’s covenant people unless compromise opens the door (Numbers 22-25).

The Call to Resist Together

Joshua and Israel rally to defend Gibeon, illustrating how God’s people must stand shoulder-to-shoulder today.

• Unity in truth—solid agreement on the authority of Scripture (John 17:17-21).

• Mutual protection—intercession, practical aid, and moral support for brothers under fire (Galatians 6:2).

• Courageous leadership—Joshua steps in immediately; passive delay emboldens the enemy (Joshua 10:7).

Practical Steps for Standing Firm

1. Stay anchored in the Word.

• Daily intake equips for discernment (Hebrews 5:14).

2. Guard alliances.

• Refuse partnerships that require theological or ethical compromise (Proverbs 4:14-15).

3. Exercise spiritual authority.

• “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee” (James 4:7).

4. Engage in corporate prayer and fasting.

• Early church answered threats this way and was filled with boldness (Acts 4:29-31).

5. Apply lawful, peaceful action.

• Paul used legal rights while never diluting gospel truth (Acts 22:25; 24:14).

6. Cultivate holy courage.

• “Be alert and sober-minded… resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

7. Expect divine intervention.

• God hurled hailstones and stopped the sun for Israel (Joshua 10:11-13). He still acts decisively in His time.

Assurance of Victory

• “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands” (Joshua 10:8).

• Christ has disarmed principalities and powers at the cross (Colossians 2:15).

• The King’s return will shatter every coalition opposed to Him (Revelation 17:14).

Walking in these truths enables believers to discern modern Adoni-zedeks, refuse entangling alliances, and stand confidently in the triumph God has already secured.

Why did Adoni-Zedek fear Joshua's victories and seek an alliance?
