Identifying God's leaders today?
How can we recognize and approach God's appointed leaders in our lives today?

Stepping into the Scene—1 Samuel 9:18

“Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, ‘Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?’ ”

• A future king humbly seeks direction from God’s prophet.

• The gateway—public yet purposeful—shows spiritual authority is often encountered in ordinary moments.

• Saul’s simple request models how to begin: recognize need, move toward God’s voice, ask with respect.

Why This Matters for Us

• God still appoints leaders (Ephesians 4:11–12).

• He commands us to honor them (Hebrews 13:7, 17).

• Discernment protects us from false shepherds (Jeremiah 23:1–2; Matthew 7:15–20).

Recognizing God-Appointed Leaders Today

Look for these biblical markers:

1. Alignment with Scripture

• “If they do not speak according to this word, there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).

2. Evident calling

• Gifts given “for the equipping of the saints” (Ephesians 4:12).

3. Proven character

• “Above reproach… self-controlled, respectable” (1 Timothy 3:2–7).

4. Spiritual fruit

• Love, joy, peace… (Galatians 5:22–23) consistently visible.

5. Servant posture

• “Not lording it over those entrusted to you” (1 Peter 5:2–3).

6. Confirmed by the body

• Timothy’s gifts were affirmed “by the laying on of hands” (1 Timothy 4:14).

Approaching God’s Leaders—as Saul Approached Samuel

1. Humility

• Saul asked, he did not demand (1 Samuel 9:18).

2. Respectful speech

• Titles (“seer”) acknowledged Samuel’s role—use courteous words (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13).

3. Teachability

• Saul listened; we come ready to receive correction (Proverbs 9:9).

4. Practical help

• Saul brought a servant and provisions (9:7–8)—supporting leaders’ needs shows honor (Galatians 6:6).

5. Prayerful discernment

• Seek confirmation from God’s Word and Spirit (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1).

Guardrails to Keep Our Focus on God

• Test everything; hold fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

• Refuse idolatry—leaders are servants, not substitutes for the Lord (Acts 10:25–26).

• Accept human limits; even Samuel aged and appointed sons (1 Samuel 8:1–3). God remains perfect.

Living It Out This Week

• Evaluate voices you follow using the six recognition markers.

• Intentionally encourage one faithful leader (Hebrews 13:17).

• Practice humble listening—schedule time with a mentor, pastor, or elder and invite input on a current decision.

• Compare every counsel you receive with clear Scripture, ensuring Christ stays central.

Closing Reflection

Like Saul at the gateway, we meet God’s appointed leaders when we step forward with humility, ask clear questions, and honor the voice of God above all. Following these patterns keeps our paths aligned with the Shepherd who still guides His people through faithful servants today.
