How can we invite Jesus into our "boat" during life's storms? Setting the Scene “When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat and started across the sea to Capernaum… A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated… They saw Jesus walking on the sea… They were terrified. But Jesus said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” Storms Are Real • The wind “grew agitated” (v. 18)—life brings sudden, unsettling events. • Scripture speaks of literal storms (Jonah 1; Acts 27) and figurative storms (Psalm 69:1-2). Both test faith. Why We Need Jesus in the Boat • He alone commands the elements: “He stilled the storm to a whisper” (Psalm 107:29). • His presence dispels fear: “Do not be afraid” (John 6:20). • With Him on board, arrival is assured: “At once the boat reached the shore” (John 6:21). How to Invite Him Aboard 1. Recognize His approach – The disciples first “saw Jesus” (v. 19). Stay alert to His Word; He speaks through Scripture (Romans 10:17). 2. Respond to His voice – He identified Himself: “It is I” (v. 20). Believe Him at His word; doubt keeps Him at a distance (James 1:6-7). 3. Willingly receive Him – “They were willing to take Him into the boat” (v. 21). Surrender control, yield the helm (Proverbs 3:5-6). 4. Cast every concern on Him – “Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6-7). Prayer hands Him the oars. 5. Obey His directives – He may ask for course corrections (Luke 5:4-5). Obedience keeps fellowship unhindered (John 15:10). Anchoring Promises for Stormy Days • Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… the rivers will not overwhelm you.” • Mark 4:39: “He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still.’ And the wind died down.” • Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock… I will come in and dine with him.” • Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you.” Living the Lesson • Keep Scripture open—His voice overpowers the gale. • Speak His name aloud when fear rises. • Remember past rescues; thanksgiving fuels faith (Psalm 77:11-14). • Share testimonies; collective memory strengthens the crew (Malachi 3:16). Jesus is always within call. When the squall hits, look up, listen, and welcome Him in—He brings safe passage every time. |
