What can we learn from Ahimaaz's persistence in delivering messages for God's kingdom? Setting the Scene “ ‘Whatever may happen,’ he said, ‘I want to run.’ So Joab said, ‘Run!’ Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite.” (2 Samuel 18:23) Ahimaaz, son of Zadok the priest, has already proven himself a faithful courier (2 Samuel 17:17–21). When the moment comes to carry news of victory over Absalom, Joab assigns the Cushite, yet Ahimaaz insists on going—determined, unstoppable, and ultimately faster. What Drives Such Persistence? • Love for the king. Ahimaaz runs not for personal glory but to serve David, God’s anointed (cf. 2 Samuel 15:32–36). • Confidence in God’s providence. “Whatever may happen” reveals a heart surrendered to the Lord’s outcome (Proverbs 3:5–6). • Zeal for good news. He longs to proclaim victory, echoing Isaiah 52:7—“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news…” • Willingness to endure. The route “by way of the plain” was longer yet smoother; persistence chooses the path that finishes well (Hebrews 12:1). Lessons for Kingdom Messengers 1. Urgency matters. The gospel is time-sensitive (John 9:4). Like Ahimaaz, believers should “run” while doors are open (Acts 20:24). 2. Obedience over comfort. Joab’s initial “You will get no reward” (v. 22) doesn’t deter him. Kingdom service seeks approval from God, not accolades (Colossians 3:23–24). 3. Preparation counts. Ahimaaz outruns the Cushite but lacks complete information about Absalom (vv. 29–30). Zeal must pair with truth (2 Timothy 2:15). 4. Endurance wins. He keeps pace until the finish, mirroring Paul’s charge: “Run in such a way as to take the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24). 5. Faithfulness is remembered. Scripture records his name repeatedly (2 Samuel 15–18), a reminder that God honors consistent servants (1 Corinthians 4:2). Supporting Snapshots from Scripture • Proverbs 25:13—A faithful messenger refreshes the master. • Ecclesiastes 9:10—Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. • Romans 10:14–15—Feet that carry the message of Christ are beautiful. • 2 Timothy 4:7—“I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” Bringing It Home • Cultivate a “whatever may happen” attitude—entrusting outcomes to God while moving forward with courage. • Marry speed with substance—study the Word so your message is both swift and sound. • Run your route—God places each believer in specific circles; outrun discouragement by focusing on your assigned field. • Finish well—persistence today prepares you for greater assignments tomorrow. Ahimaaz’s determined sprint down the plain echoes across the centuries, calling every follower of Christ to carry the King’s message with urgency, accuracy, and unwavering devotion. |
