Lessons from destroyed cities?
What lessons can we learn from the destruction of "cities where they dwelt"?

A snapshot of the verse

“So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham” (Genesis 19:29).

“He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where Lot had lived” (Genesis 19:29).

Why the cities fell

• Persistent, unrepentant wickedness (Genesis 18:20).

• Blatant rejection of divine warnings (Genesis 19:14).

• A culture celebrating sin rather than mourning it (Isaiah 5:20).

• No righteous remnant large enough to stay judgment (Genesis 18:32).

Key lessons for today

1. God’s justice is certain

• “He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction” (2 Peter 2:6).

• Sin’s payday may feel delayed, yet it is inevitable (Romans 6:23).

2. Intercession matters

• Abraham’s pleas show the power of praying for others (Genesis 18:23-33).

• Our prayers can delay disaster or rescue loved ones (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

3. Personal righteousness does not exempt us from obeying the call to flee

• Lot was spared, but only when he left the city (Genesis 19:15-17).

• Obedience must be prompt—lingering invites loss (Luke 17:32).

4. Judgment separates the committed from the compromised

• Lot’s wife looked back and perished (Genesis 19:26).

• Half-hearted discipleship cannot stand when crisis hits (James 1:8).

5. The allure of a sinful culture is powerful—and deadly

• Everything Lot built there burned to ash (Genesis 19:29).

• “Do not love the world or anything in the world” (1 John 2:15).

6. God always preserves a remnant

• He “rescued righteous Lot” (2 Peter 2:7).

• Even in judgment, mercy shines for those who trust Him (Psalm 91:7-8).

7. Future judgment is real

• Sodom is “an example of what is coming on the ungodly” (2 Peter 2:6).

• Christ warned, “It will be the same on the day the Son of Man is revealed” (Luke 17:30).

Living it out

• Cultivate a lifestyle of daily repentance.

• Pray earnestly for your city and nation.

• Hold earthly possessions loosely; invest in the kingdom that cannot burn (Matthew 6:19-20).

• Respond immediately when God’s Word calls for change.

Hope beyond the ashes

• God “remembered Abraham”—He never forgets His covenant people (Hebrews 13:5).

• The same Lord who judges also saves “to the uttermost” all who come to Him (Hebrews 7:25).
