Link 1 Tim 1:17 to God's sovereign verses.
Connect 1 Timothy 1:17 with other scriptures emphasizing God's sovereignty.

Setting the Scene

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

Timothy had just heard Paul recount God’s mercy in saving a former persecutor. Paul can’t hold back; he erupts in praise of a sovereign King who rules history and redeems sinners. That same heartbeat of worship pulses through all of Scripture.

Four Royal Attributes

• Eternal – outside of time and unchanging (Psalm 90:2; Revelation 1:8).

• Immortal – life in Himself, untouched by decay (1 Timothy 6:16).

• Invisible – beyond the reach of mortal sight, yet near (Colossians 1:15; John 1:18).

• The Only God – none beside Him (Isaiah 45:5; Deuteronomy 4:35).

Each trait flows into His absolute sovereignty.

Old Testament Portraits of Sovereignty

Psalm 103:19 – “The LORD has established His throne in heaven; His kingdom rules over all.”

Psalm 135:6 – “The LORD does whatever pleases Him in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all their depths.”

Isaiah 46:9-10 – “I am God, and there is no other… My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure.”

Daniel 4:34-35 – Nations rise and fall by His decree; “none can restrain His hand.”

Job 42:2 – “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

New Testament Echoes

Colossians 1:16-17 – “All things were created through Him and for Him… in Him all things hold together.”

Ephesians 1:11 – He “works out everything according to the counsel of His will.”

Romans 11:33-36 – Every detail of redemptive history springs from “the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God.”

Revelation 19:6 – “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.”

Why Sovereignty Fuels Worship

• Security – Because the King is eternal, His promises never expire (Numbers 23:19).

• Purpose – His invisible hand weaves trials and triumphs for our good (Romans 8:28).

• Humility – Recognizing “the only God” shatters pride and self-reliance (James 4:13-16).

• Hope – The immortal Ruler guarantees a future where every knee bows (Philippians 2:10-11).

Living in Light of the King

• Trust His plan—He sees what we cannot.

• Rest in His power—nothing slips through His grasp.

• Celebrate His glory—let praise, like Paul’s, rise whenever His mercy is tasted.

How can we honor God as 'the only God' in our daily lives?
