Reading the Text

Proverbs 8:22

“The LORD created me as His first course, before His works of old.”

John 1:1-3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.”

Noticing the Shared Themes

• Both passages plant us “in the beginning.”

• Each introduces a Person distinct from yet inseparable with God.

• Creation flows outward from this Person—nothing exists without Him.

Wisdom Speaking in Proverbs 8

• The chapter presents Wisdom as a living, speaking companion of God.

• Verse 22 uses the Hebrew qanah, a verb that means “to possess, acquire, or create.” In context, Wisdom is eternally possessed by God, not a late arrival on the scene (vv. 23-31).

• Wisdom rejoices, delights, and participates as the cosmos takes shape.

The Word Revealed in John 1

• John affirms the full deity (“the Word was God”) and eternal pre-existence (“in the beginning”) of the Logos.

• Creation is traced directly through Him (cf. Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:2-3).

Wisdom and the Word—One Person, Jesus Christ

1 Corinthians 1:24 calls Jesus “the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

Colossians 2:3 adds that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Revelation 3:14 names Him “the Originator of God’s creation,” echoing both Proverbs 8 and John 1.

• Taken together, Wisdom (Proverbs 8) and the Word (John 1) converge in the eternal Son, who is both God’s wisdom personified and the divine Agent of creation.

Creation’s Blueprint in Action

• Eternal Fellowship: Father and Son share perfect communion before anything exists (John 17:5).

• Purposeful Design: The created order manifests divine wisdom (Psalm 104:24).

• Personal Involvement: The Son is no distant architect; He “upholds all things by His powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3).

Living Out the Connection

• Confidence: The same Christ who saved us fashioned the universe; nothing is outside His control.

• Reverence: Creation is sacred because it bears the imprint of divine wisdom.

• Guidance: Seeking Christ is the sure path to true wisdom for daily life (James 1:5; Proverbs 2:6).
