The Scene of Sorrow

“ And I began to weep bitterly, because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or look inside it.” (Revelation 5:4)

John’s tears capture the aching question echoing through the ages: Who can carry out God’s final plan for judgment and redemption?

Why Worthiness Matters

• The unopened scroll means God’s purposes seem stalled.

• Without a qualified champion, justice, restoration, and the fulfillment of every promise remain out of reach.

• Scripture insists the only suitable candidate must be both perfectly righteous and divinely appointed.

Old Testament Bread-Crumbs Pointing to the Worthy One

1. Genesis 49:9-10 – The Lion of Judah

• “The scepter will not depart from Judah… and the obedience of the nations shall be his.”

• Signals a royal figure from Judah entrusted with global authority—mirrored in Revelation 5:5.

2. Isaiah 11:1-5 – The Spirit-Anointed Judge

• “He will not judge by what His eyes see… but with righteousness He will judge the poor.”

• Worthiness flows from flawless discernment and Spirit-empowered righteousness.

3. Isaiah 9:6-7 – Government on His Shoulders

• “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end… to establish it with justice and righteousness from that time and forever.”

• Eternal throne credentials make Him uniquely fit to break the seals of history.

4. Psalm 2:7-9 – The Installed Son

• “Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance… You will break them with an iron scepter.”

• Divine decree authorizes Him to execute judgment written in the scroll.

5. Daniel 7:13-14 – The Son of Man Receives Dominion

• “To Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples… should serve Him.”

• Heavenly transfer of authority anticipates the heavenly courtroom of Revelation 5.

6. Psalm 40:6-8 – Delighting to Do God’s Will

• “I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”

• Obedient heart qualifies Him to enact every line sealed in the scroll.

7. Isaiah 53:10-12 – The Suffering, Vindicated Servant

• “He will bear their iniquities… I will allot Him a portion with the great.”

• Sacrificial victory over sin validates His moral fitness to open the book of destiny.

8. Zechariah 6:12-13 – The Branch, Priest-King

• “He will build the temple of the LORD… and He will be a priest on His throne.”

• Combines priestly mediation with royal authority—exactly what Revelation unfolds.

From Promise to Fulfillment

• Every prophecy sketches part of a composite portrait: royal lineage, flawless righteousness, Spirit anointing, priestly mediation, global authority, sacrificial obedience.

• Only Jesus of Nazareth matches the entire profile—crucified, risen, ascended, and now standing in heaven as “the Lamb who was slain” (Revelation 5:6).

Why John’s Tears Turn to Triumph

• The Old Testament never left the world without hope; it consistently pointed to a coming One who could do what no mere human could.

Revelation 5:4 exposes the crisis; Revelation 5:5-7 supplies the long-awaited solution foretold by the prophets.

• Because the Messiah proved worthy, the scroll opens, God’s purposes advance, and the story races to its promised conclusion—just as Scripture said all along.
