A Tale of Two Masters

Romans 6:16

“Do you not know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?”

Galatians 5:1

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.”

What Slavery to Sin Looks Like

• Sin is a master that always pays in death (Romans 6:23).

• It deceives, promising pleasure yet producing bondage (2 Peter 2:19).

• Jesus said, “everyone who sins is a slave to sin” (John 8:34).

• Slavery to sin is lived out in:

– Deadness of spirit (Ephesians 2:1)

– Darkened understanding (Ephesians 4:18)

– Destructive habits that dominate (Titus 3:3)

Christ’s Freedom Defined

• Freedom is not autonomy; it is transfer of ownership.

Colossians 1:13: “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son.”

John 8:36: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

• Freedom in Christ means:

– Release from sin’s penalty (Romans 8:1)

– Power to live righteously (Romans 6:18)

– Purposeful service to God (1 Peter 2:16)

Standing Firm—Guarding the Freedom

Galatians 5:1 commands a posture: “Stand firm.” Practically, that involves:

1. Recognize the old yoke.

• Sin’s “easy” pull is familiar but fatal.

• Remember its fruit: shame and death (Romans 6:21).

2. Embrace new habits of obedience.

• Offer your body “as instruments of righteousness” (Romans 6:13).

• Walk by the Spirit to avoid gratifying the flesh (Galatians 5:16).

3. Saturate the mind with truth.

• “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

• Meditate on Scripture daily (Psalm 119:45).

4. Stay connected to the body of Christ.

• Encourage one another daily so sin’s deceit won’t harden hearts (Hebrews 3:13).

• Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

Freedom’s Purpose—Serving in Love

• Freedom is expressed in love-driven obedience (Galatians 5:13).

• The Spirit produces fruit that contrasts sharply with sin’s works (Galatians 5:19-23).

• Serving God leads to “sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life” (Romans 6:22).
