Mark 5:19: Inspire local evangelism?
How can Mark 5:19 inspire us to evangelize within our own communities?

The Setting: A Life Transformed

– Jesus frees the Gerasene demoniac from a legion of demons (Mark 5:1-18).

– The once-possessed man is now “sitting there, clothed and in his right mind” (v. 15).

– His first impulse: follow Jesus onto the boat (v. 18).

– Jesus redirects him: “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you” (Mark 5:19).

Core Command: Go Home and Tell

– “Go home”: evangelism begins where we already live.

– “To your own people”: family, friends, neighbors—those who know our past.

– “Tell them”: verbal witness is expected, not merely silent example.

– “How much the Lord has done”: recount God’s specific acts, not vague generalities.

– “How He has had mercy on you”: highlight grace; the spotlight stays on Christ, not us.

Principles for Community Evangelism

• Start with your sphere: Our ordinary circles are God-appointed mission fields (cf. Acts 1:8 “in Jerusalem”).

• Share your story: Personal testimony carries authority because it’s experiential (cf. Psalm 66:16).

• Emphasize mercy over merit: Salvation is God’s kindness, not our achievement (Ephesians 2:4-9).

• Be willing to stay: Sometimes the call is not to distant lands but to familiar streets.

• Obedience over preference: The healed man wanted to travel; Jesus asked him to remain. We follow Christ’s plan, not our own.

Practical Steps for Today

– Write down specific ways the Lord has shown mercy: answered prayers, changed habits, healed relationships.

– Identify “your own people”: family chat groups, co-workers, gym buddies, school parents.

– Initiate natural conversations: “Can I share something God did for me this week?”

– Use everyday settings: meals, coffee breaks, neighborhood walks.

– Keep the focus on Christ’s work, not personal improvement tips.

– Offer Scripture: weave in verses that explain the gospel (Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-10).

– Live consistently: visible transformation authenticates spoken testimony (Matthew 5:16).

– Prepare to answer questions with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).

– Pray for opportunities and boldness (Colossians 4:3-4).

Scriptural Reinforcement

Acts 1:8 — “You will be My witnesses… in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Begin local, extend outward.

Romans 10:14-15 — People cannot believe without a messenger; we are the messengers.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 — God “has given us the ministry of reconciliation.”

Philippians 2:15-16 — Shine as lights, “holding forth the word of life.”

Encouragement to Act

The man in Mark 5 obeyed immediately, and “all the people were amazed” (Mark 5:20). Our communities still hunger for living proof of God’s mercy. Share what Jesus has done; let amazement spread again.

What obstacles might prevent us from sharing God's work in our lives?
