Meaning of "freedom for captives" today?
What does "freedom for the captives" mean in a spiritual context today?

The Word Jesus Chose to Announce His Mission

“ ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ ” (Luke 4:18-19; cf. Isaiah 61:1-2)

Captivity in Scripture: More Than Chains

• Bondage to sin – “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” (John 8:34)

• Bondage to the devil’s rule – “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19)

• Bondage to death and fear – “Through fear of death [we were] subject to lifelong slavery.” (Hebrews 2:15)

• Bondage to the law’s condemnation – “The letter kills.” (2 Corinthians 3:6)

What Freedom Looks Like in Christ Today

• Release from guilt and condemnation

– “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

• Power to turn from habitual sin

– “Our old self was crucified with Him… so that we would no longer be slaves to sin.” (Romans 6:6)

• Transfer of ownership

– “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son.” (Colossians 1:13)

• Confidence before God as adopted children

– “You received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’ ” (Romans 8:15)

• Freedom to serve in love rather than earn favor

– “You were called to freedom… serve one another in love.” (Galatians 5:13)

• Liberty from fear of death

– “Whoever lives and believes in Me will never die.” (John 11:26)

Freedom Does Not Mean

• Absence of struggle (Galatians 5:17)

• Independence from God’s authority (Romans 6:18)

• License to sin (Romans 6:1-2)

Everyday Expressions of Spiritual Freedom

• Saying no to addictive behaviors by the Spirit’s power (Galatians 5:16)

• Forgiving offenders because Christ forgave us (Ephesians 4:32)

• Worship without fear, knowing we are accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6)

• Boldly sharing the gospel, unshackled by shame (2 Timothy 1:7-8)

• Resting from performance-driven religion, enjoying Sabbath rest in Christ (Hebrews 4:9-10)

The Ongoing Work of the Spirit

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

• He applies Christ’s finished work moment by moment.

• He illumines Scripture, breaking lies that keep us bound.

• He empowers obedience that was impossible in the flesh.

Looking Ahead

• Ultimate freedom arrives when Christ returns and even the presence of sin is removed (Revelation 22:3-4).

• Until then, believers live as liberated ambassadors, inviting other captives to Christ’s open door (2 Corinthians 5:20).
