Meaning of "sanctuary" in God's care?
What does "a sanctuary for them" signify about God's protection and provision?

Setting the Scene: Israel in Exile

“Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Although I have sent them far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries, yet for a little while I have been a sanctuary for them in the countries to which they have gone.’ ” (Ezekiel 11:16)

Israel’s leaders are corrupt, Jerusalem is about to fall, and many Israelites already live in Babylonian exile.

Without the temple, they fear they have lost access to God’s presence and protection.

God Defines ‘Sanctuary’—Not Geography, but Himself

The Hebrew miqdāsh means a sacred, set-apart place. Here, God Himself steps into that role.

He promises that even outside the demolished temple, His presence travels with His people.

Protection Highlighted in ‘A Sanctuary for Them’

• An unbreachable refuge

– “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I will never be shaken.” (Psalm 62:2)

• Shelter in hostile territory

– As the Babylonians surround them, God encircles them: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 125:2)

• A constant guard, not a seasonal one

– “For a little while” shows duration during exile, yet anticipates the permanent dwelling of Ezekiel 37:26-27.

• Security that outlasts earthly structures

– The temple may burn, but the Protector never leaves or forsakes His covenant people (Deuteronomy 31:6).

Provision Embedded in ‘A Sanctuary for Them’

• Spiritual nourishment

– God supplies the means to worship, pray, and receive revelation even in foreign soil (cf. Daniel 6:10).

• Identity preservation

– Calling Himself a sanctuary safeguards their distinct calling; they remain His people, not Babylon’s captives in spirit.

• Hope of restoration

– The temporary sanctuary in exile previews the everlasting sanctuary “among them forever” (Ezekiel 37:26).

• Daily mercies

– Like manna in the wilderness, His presence meets every practical need (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Why This Matters Now

• The church may lose buildings or cultural favor, yet God Himself is our secure dwelling (Hebrews 13:5-6).

• Trials that scatter believers become platforms where His protective, providing presence shines.

• The ultimate fulfillment comes in Revelation 21:3—“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with men”—where the sanctuary is not a building but the unveiled presence of the Lord forever.
