Overcome fear of opposition to God?
How can we overcome fear of opposition when witnessing God's power?

Setting the Scene: A Sign That Shook the City

Acts 4 records Peter and John healing a man lame from birth. Dragged before the Sanhedrin, they face leaders who confess, “What shall we do with these men? … we cannot deny it” (Acts 4:16). Their courage under fire teaches us how to face our own opposition.

What Fear Looks Like—and Why It Fades

• Opponents admitted the miracle but still threatened the messengers (Acts 4:18).

• Fear whispers, “Stop before it costs you,” yet truth towers above threats.

• Because the sign was undeniable, the apostles’ confidence was unshakable—an example for every believer.

Convictions That Quiet the Heart

1. God’s work is undeniable (Acts 4:16). No opposition can erase what He has done.

2. Boldness flows from time with Jesus (Acts 4:13): being with Him matters more than credentials.

3. We answer to God before people (Acts 4:19). The highest court has already ruled in our favor.

4. We speak what we have “seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). Personal encounter outshouts external pressure.

Power Sources for Courage

• The Holy Spirit’s filling (Acts 4:31). Boldness isn’t worked up; it’s poured in.

• A Spirit of power, love, and self-control—not fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

• God’s perfect love that drives out fear (1 John 4:18).

• The unbreakable promise of God’s favor: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

• The Lord as fortress: “Whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1).

Practical Steps to Overcome Fear of Opposition

• Recall undeniable works of God in your own life; write them down.

• Spend daily, unhurried time “with Jesus” so boldness becomes natural.

• Ask the Spirit to fill you before, during, and after every conversation.

• Speak Scripture aloud; truth heard drowns out threats felt.

• Share the load—seek fellowship like Peter and John did when they returned to their friends (Acts 4:23-24).

• Turn threats into prayer fuel; watch God shake the room again (Acts 4:31).

• Keep the focus on obedience, not outcomes; God handles results.

Promises to Stand On When Opposition Rises

Exodus 14:13 — “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation.”

Matthew 10:19-20 — “Do not worry about how to respond or what to say … your Father speaks through you.”

Hebrews 13:6 — “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Living the Lesson

Opposition may feel loud, but God’s acts are louder. Remember what cannot be denied, rely on the Spirit who cannot be silenced, and speak the name that cannot be overthrown. Courage grows when you treasure Christ’s power more than people’s approval—and that courage testifies even louder than words.
