Prioritize God's will over opinions?
How can we prioritize God's will over people's opinions in our lives?

Setting the Scene

Matthew 14:5 tells us: “Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the people, because they regarded John as a prophet.”

• Scripture records this historical moment with complete accuracy, showing Herod’s inward conflict—he knew what he wanted, but public opinion kept him from acting.

• The verse exposes a timeless struggle: people-pleasing versus God-pleasing.

The Trap of People-Pleasing

Proverbs 29:25: “The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is set securely on high.”

Galatians 1:10: “Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? … If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

• Herod’s fear shows how valuing human opinion can cripple obedience; in contrast, God calls believers to fearless loyalty to His will.

Principles for Putting God First

1. Recognize the Authority of Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed … so that the man of God may be complete.” God’s Word defines reality and our duty, overruling cultural voices.

2. Remember God’s Sovereignty

Isaiah 51:12-13. If the LORD rules history, people’s opinions lose ultimate weight.

3. Rehearse Your Identity in Christ

1 Peter 2:9: you are chosen, royal, set apart—already accepted by the highest Authority.

4. Rest in Eternity’s Verdict

2 Corinthians 5:10: we each “must appear before the judgment seat of Christ.” His assessment, not public polls, will last forever.

Practical Steps You Can Start Today

• Morning Alignment: open Scripture first; ask, “What does God command?” before checking messages or social feeds.

• Speak Truth Gently but Clearly: follow Acts 5:29—“We must obey God rather than men.” Refusing to compromise honors Him and often earns respect, even from critics.

• Limit the Noise: reduce media or relationships that pressure you to downplay obedience.

• Accountability: share convictions with a mature believer who values Scripture’s authority and will pray with you to stay bold.

• Celebrate Small Victories: every time you choose God’s will over popular opinion, thank Him; it builds courage for bigger tests.

Encouraging Promises to Anchor Your Heart

Psalm 118:6: “The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men … it is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Choosing God’s will over people’s opinions frees us from the snare that trapped Herod and aligns us with the unchanging purposes of our faithful Lord.
