Prioritize worship over criticism daily?
How can you prioritize worship over criticism in your daily life?

Seeing the Scene Clearly

“Some of those present expressed their indignation to one another: ‘Why this waste of perfume?’ ” (Mark 14:4)

• A woman pours costly nard on Jesus.

• Critics label the act “waste.”

• Jesus calls it “a beautiful deed” (v. 6).

The contrast frames the lesson: worship elevates Christ; criticism obscures Him.

Tracing the Roots of Criticism

• Focus on temporal loss rather than eternal gain.

• Measuring value in currency instead of devotion.

• Comparing others’ offerings instead of examining one’s own heart (cf. John 12:4–6; Luke 18:11).

• Masking self-righteousness as fiscal responsibility.

Recognizing Worship’s True Worth

• Worship is directed to a Person, not a program (John 4:23).

• Worship perceives Christ’s surpassing value (Philippians 3:8).

• Worship acts now because opportunities can pass (Mark 14:8, “She has done what she could”).

• Worship flows from gratitude, not obligation (Psalm 116:12–13).

Daily Choices That Favor Worship Over Criticism

1. Begin each day by reading a Gospel scene; let Christ fill your horizon before people do.

2. Speak gratitude aloud—criticism starves when praise fills the room (Psalm 103:1–2).

3. When tempted to fault-find, pause and bless instead: “Lord, thank You for what You’re doing in them.”

4. Practice secret acts of honor toward Christ—give, serve, encourage without announcement (Matthew 6:3–4).

5. Recall how much mercy you’ve received; mercy silences complaint (James 2:13).

6. Surround yourself with worship music and Scripture memory; tune the heart upward (Colossians 3:16).

7. End the day recounting moments where worship won; note where criticism slipped in and repent quickly.

Scripture Threads That Strengthen the Habit

Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.”

Ephesians 4:29: “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up….”

Hebrews 13:15: “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise….”

1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 2:14–15: “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure….”

Living the Contrast

Criticism counts the cost to self; worship counts the worth of Christ. Each day offers the same fork in the road Mark 14 lays before us. Choose the path Mary walked—lavish honor on Jesus—and criticism will wither in the light of His glory.
