Prioritizing Jesus over daily tasks?
How can we prioritize Jesus over our daily responsibilities and commitments?

The Call and the Response

“ And at once they left their nets and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:20)

Simon Peter and Andrew had jobs, families, and plans for the rest of the day—yet Jesus’ simple invitation eclipsed everything else. Their instant obedience sets the pattern for every disciple.

Understanding the Scene

• Nets meant livelihood, stability, identity.

• Leaving them meant entrusting provision, reputation, and future to Jesus.

• “At once” underscores urgency; no negotiation, delay, or partial compliance.

What “At Once” Looks Like Today

• Rearranging schedules so time with Christ is the immovable block on the calendar.

• Allowing His Word—not social media, news, or emails—to speak first and loudest each morning.

• Holding career, finances, hobbies, and even ministry plans with open hands, ready to pivot when His direction becomes clear.

• Responding immediately when Scripture or the Spirit highlights sin or a next step of obedience.

Barriers We Face

• Security: “nets” feel safer than uncharted waters (cf. Proverbs 3:5-6).

• Approval: family, coworkers, or culture may not understand (cf. Galatians 1:10).

• Comfort: routines are easier than radical trust (cf. Luke 9:23).

Practical Steps to Put Jesus First

1. Start with the Kingdom. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

2. Schedule daily non-negotiable time in Scripture and prayer; treat it as seriously as any job requirement.

3. Surrender priorities each morning: verbally place family, work, finances, and plans before Him.

4. Practice instant obedience in small nudges—an encouraging text, an act of generosity—so larger calls become natural.

5. Regularly audit commitments: keep only those that align with His purposes (cf. Ephesians 5:15-17).

6. Invite accountability from a mature believer who will notice when nets creep back into hand.

Encouragement from Other Passages

Luke 14:26-27—Jesus clarifies that discipleship surpasses every earthly tie.

Colossians 3:17—Whatever you do, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, making even mundane tasks an act of devotion.

Psalm 37:4—Delight in the Lord, and He reshapes desires, easing the tension between duty and devotion.

John 15:5—Abiding in Him produces lasting fruit, proving that putting Him first never diminishes effectiveness.

A Closing Challenge

Picture your own “nets”—anything absorbing primary attention or trust. Lay them at Jesus’ feet today, trusting that the One who called fishermen to change the world will handle every detail you release.

What sacrifices might Jesus be asking you to make today?
