Psalm 17:14: Praying for contentment?
How can Psalm 17:14 guide our prayers for contentment and reliance on God?

Setting Psalm 17:14 in View

“from such men, O LORD, by Your hand— from men of the world whose portion is in this life. May You fill the bellies of Your treasured ones; may their children have plenty, leaving their wealth to their little ones.” (Psalm 17:14)

Seeing the Contrast in Psalm 17:14

• “Men of the world”: people whose satisfaction is limited to what they can grasp here and now.

• “Portion is in this life”: earthly rewards, temporary security, self-reliance.

• “Your treasured ones” (lit. “beloved”): those who belong to the LORD and depend on His hand for every need.

This verse sets up two ways to live and two ways to pray:

1. Seek contentment in what fades (the world’s way).

2. Seek contentment in the Giver who never fades (the believer’s way).

Praying for Contentment

• Acknowledge God as the Source: “May You fill the bellies…”—ask Him, not circumstances, to satisfy every real need (Philippians 4:19).

• Celebrate daily provision: thank Him for each meal, paycheck, breath (1 Timothy 6:8).

• Guard the heart from envy: confess when someone else’s “portion in this life” looks tempting (Psalm 73:2-3, 17).

• Measure abundance by God’s presence, not possessions (Psalm 16:5-6).

Praying for Reliance on God

• “By Your hand”—pray consciously, “Father, I’m in Your hand; keep me from trusting my own.”

• Surrender future generations: the verse pictures children and grandchildren provided for; trust Him with family legacy (Proverbs 13:22; Psalm 37:25-26).

• Replace anxiety with petition: bring every want before Him, refusing self-made solutions (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Request a satisfied spirit, not just a stocked pantry: “Satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness” (Psalm 90:14).

Supporting Scriptures to Strengthen Our Perspective

Matthew 6:19-21—treasures in heaven versus earth.

Hebrews 13:5—“Be content with what you have, for He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

Proverbs 30:8-9—“Give me neither poverty nor riches… lest I deny You.”

1 Timothy 6:17—command the rich not to hope in wealth, “but in God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”

Living This Out Day by Day

1. Start each morning by reading Psalm 17:14 aloud, reminding your soul who fills and who merely pretends to fill.

2. List three ways God met physical needs yesterday—food, shelter, strength. Thank Him specifically.

3. When tempted by comparison, speak the verse: “Their portion is in this life; my portion is the LORD.”

4. Pass contentment on: talk with children or friends about God’s faithfulness, shaping a heritage that values Him above surplus.

5. End the day asking, “Where did I lean on my own hand instead of His?” Confess and rest, knowing tomorrow’s portion is secure in Him.
