Qualities of Helez to emulate?
What qualities of Helez can we emulate in our Christian walk?

Setting the Scene: Who Was Helez?

2 Samuel 23:26 lists “Helez the Paltite” among David’s elite warriors.

1 Chronicles 11:27 repeats his name, while 1 Chronicles 27:10 shows him later commanding 24,000 soldiers for one month each year.

• Though only briefly mentioned, Scripture preserves his record to highlight qualities God values.

Quality 1: Courage in the Thick of Battle

“Be strong and courageous, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

• As a “mighty man,” Helez faced real swords and spears—yet trusted God’s presence.

• Our daily battles—temptation, opposition, discouragement—call for the same courage rooted in God’s promise (2 Timothy 1:7).

Quality 2: Loyal Allegiance to God’s Anointed King

• Helez chose David when Saul still sat on Israel’s throne; that loyalty cost risk and hardship.

• In Christ, “the Son of David,” we show similar allegiance when culture pulls us elsewhere (Luke 9:23).

• Loyalty is proven over time, not declared once and forgotten (John 6:68–69).

Quality 3: Faithfulness When Few Are Watching

• Scripture records no dramatic speech or solo victory for Helez—just steady obedience.

Hebrews 6:10 reminds us God “will not forget your work and the love you have shown.”

• Faithfulness in unnoticed tasks—parenting, workplace integrity, quiet prayer—builds the Kingdom as surely as public exploits.

Quality 4: Steadfast Service Over the Long Haul

1 Chronicles 27:10 shows Helez still active years after the civil wars ended.

• Endurance matters: “Let us run with perseverance the race set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).

• Helez teaches that zealous starts must mature into lifelong devotion (Galatians 6:9).

Quality 5: Prepared Readiness

• As commander for the seventh month, Helez had 24,000 trained men on standby. Preparation preceded action.

1 Peter 3:15: “Always be prepared to give a defense…”

• Spiritual disciplines—prayer, Scripture intake, fellowship—keep us ready when God calls.

Putting It All Together

Qualities to emulate:

1. Courage anchored in God’s presence.

2. Loyal allegiance to Christ even when unpopular.

3. Quiet faithfulness in hidden places.

4. Enduring commitment through seasons of life.

5. Ongoing readiness through disciplined preparation.

Like Helez, we may never see our names in lights, yet Heaven records every act of courageous, loyal, faithful, enduring, prepared service.

How does 2 Samuel 23:26 inspire us to serve God faithfully today?
