React to leaders ignoring God's will?
How should we respond when leaders prioritize convenience over God's instructions?

Jeroboam’s Convenience Choice

“Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people priests who were not Levites.” (1 Kings 12:31)

What Went Wrong?

• God had clearly limited priestly service to the Levites (Numbers 3:10).

• Centralized worship was to take place where He chose, ultimately Jerusalem (Deuteronomy 12:13-14).

• Jeroboam feared losing political control (1 Kings 12:26-27), so he invented an easier, more “accessible” system.

• Convenience displaced obedience, opening the door to idolatry.

Why Convenience Tempts Leaders—and Us

• It reduces cost, time, and conflict.

• It feeds human fear of losing influence or popularity.

• It disguises itself as “practical ministry.”

• It gains quick public approval (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

Scripture’s Warnings About Compromise

Exodus 32:4-8 – Israel’s first golden calf: “Make us gods who will go before us.”

1 Samuel 15:22-23 – “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Matthew 15:9 – “In vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commands of men.”

Galatians 1:10 – “If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Our Right Response When Leaders veer toward Convenience

1. Measure everything against Scripture (Acts 17:11).

2. Remain loyal to God’s revealed pattern, even if it feels “outdated.”

3. Speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) while honoring positions of authority (Romans 13:1).

4. Refuse personal participation in forbidden practices (Daniel 3:18).

5. Choose obedience over safety or popularity: “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29).

6. Pray for leaders to repent and realign with God’s instruction (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Practical Steps for Everyday Faithfulness

• Daily Bible intake—keeps discernment sharp.

• Fellowship with believers who value obedience over trend.

• Serve in ministries that honor biblical patterns.

• Support leaders who uphold truth, not just charisma.

• Be ready to “come out and be separate” if worship becomes unbiblical (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Hope from Faithful Examples

• Noah built as God commanded, not as neighbors advised (Genesis 6:22).

• Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stayed faithful amid government pressure (Daniel 3).

• Peter and John chose God’s command over the Sanhedrin’s convenience (Acts 4:19-20).

Takeaway

When leaders trade God’s clear direction for the ease of human convenience, God calls His people to discern, stay anchored in Scripture, and courageously obey Him first.

In what ways can we guard against modern-day 'high places' in our lives?
