Resist temptation like Jesus in Luke 4:2?
How can we resist temptation as Jesus did in Luke 4:2?

The Setting: Forty Days of Trial

• “For forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were complete, He was hungry.” (Luke 4:2)

• Jesus entered the wilderness “full of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 4:1) and stayed until every test had run its course.

• His physical weakness only highlighted the strength of His dependence on the Father.

The Strategy Jesus Modeled

• Scripture at the Ready

– Each temptation drew a direct, verbal response from Deuteronomy (Luke 4:4, 8, 12).

Psalm 119:11 reminds us, “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”

• Spirit–Led Readiness

– Jesus was “led by the Spirit” (Luke 4:1).

Galatians 5:16: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

• Identity Secure

– Satan twice prodded, “If You are the Son of God…” (Luke 4:3, 9).

– Jesus never argued; He rested in the Father’s declaration at His baptism (Luke 3:22).

• Immediate, Firm Resistance

– He did not negotiate or delay. James 4:7 puts it plainly: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

• Patient Trust in God’s Timing

– Jesus refused premature satisfaction (stones to bread) or shortcut glory (kingdoms of the world).

1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves… that He may exalt you in due time.”

Practical Steps for Us Today

• Stockpile Truth

– Daily reading, memorization, and meditation arm us for battle (Ephesians 6:17).

– Start with passages Jesus quoted: Deuteronomy 6 & 8.

• Fast and Pray

– Regular fasting trains the body to yield to the Spirit and sharpens spiritual sensitivity (Matthew 6:16-18).

• Affirm Your Identity in Christ

Romans 8:16: “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

– Speak that truth when temptation whispers otherwise.

• Lean on the Spirit

– Pray in the moment of testing: “Spirit of God, empower me to obey.”

– Remember 1 Corinthians 10:13: there is always a God-provided way of escape.

• Stay Alert and Shut the Door Early

– Temptation often begins with a thought. Captivate it (2 Corinthians 10:5).

– Replace it with a verse, a hymn, or thanksgiving.

Promises to Hold On To

Hebrews 4:15-16—Jesus sympathizes and offers timely help.

Isaiah 40:31—“Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength.”

Romans 16:20—“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”

Growing Stronger After the Battle

• Victory deepens dependence, not pride.

Luke 4:14 shows Jesus leaving the wilderness “in the power of the Spirit.” Our tested faith likewise matures and energizes ministry (James 1:2-4).

Following His pattern—Word in heart, Spirit in control, identity secure—we can meet every temptation with the same confidence Jesus displayed in Luke 4:2.
