Respecting parents: link to God?
How does respecting parents reflect our relationship with God?

Setting the Scene

“Whoever curses his father or mother, his lamp will be extinguished in deepest darkness.”

Proverbs 20:20

The verse is stark: treating parents with contempt invites darkness, the opposite of God’s light. Because Scripture is literal and trustworthy, that warning carries weight for every generation.

Why Parental Respect Matters to God

• Parents stand as God-given authorities (Exodus 20:12).

• God’s order begins in the home; how we respond there reveals our response to Him (Ephesians 6:1–3).

• Rejecting parents mirrors rejecting the Father who ordained family (Malachi 1:6).

• Honoring them trains the heart to honor all of God’s commands (Deuteronomy 6:1–7).

Linking Proverbs 20:20 with Other Passages

Exodus 21:17 parallels the warning: “Whoever curses his father or mother must surely be put to death.” The severity underscores God’s holiness.

Matthew 15:3–6 shows Jesus upholding the command, rebuking traditions that excuse dishonor.

Colossians 3:20 adds the positive: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.” Obedience pleases God because it mirrors submission to Him.

Cursing vs. Honoring: Two Paths, Two Outcomes

1. Cursing (Proverbs 20:20)

– Verbal or heart-level contempt

– Outcome: “lamp … extinguished,” loss of guidance, joy, and divine favor

2. Honoring (Exodus 20:12)

– Respectful speech, willing obedience, practical care

– Outcome: “that your days may be long,” a life blessed with God’s presence

How Respecting Parents Reflects Our Walk with God

• Submission shows we trust God’s wisdom in placing us under their care.

• Honor demonstrates gratitude, a core attitude toward our heavenly Father (Psalm 100:4).

• Obedience cultivates humility, essential for discipleship (James 4:6–7).

• Family respect becomes a living testimony; a bright, unextinguished lamp (Matthew 5:14–16).

Practical Ways to Honor Parents

• Speak well of them—build, don’t belittle (Ephesians 4:29).

• Listen actively—value their counsel (Proverbs 1:8–9).

• Serve willingly—meet practical needs (Mark 7:10–13).

• Forgive quickly—reflect God’s mercy (Ephesians 4:32).

Living in the Light

Choosing honor keeps our “lamp” burning, a vivid picture of fellowship with God. In every season—childhood, adulthood, even caring for aging parents—respect remains a direct reflection of how we revere the One who calls Himself our Father.
