Respond to delayed promises like Exodus 5:23?
How should we respond when God's promises seem delayed, as in Exodus 5:23?

Understanding the Cry of Exodus 5:23

“Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all.” (Exodus 5:23)

Moses voices what many of us feel: “Lord, You promised—why the delay?”

Why Delays Happen

• God is arranging circumstances to display His glory more fully (Exodus 6:1).

• He is shaping the faith and character of His people (James 1:2-4).

• His timing encompasses more people and purposes than we can see (2 Peter 3:9).

Anchoring in God’s Unchanging Character

Faithful – “He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)

Powerful – “With a mighty hand he will let them go.” (Exodus 6:1)

Purposeful – “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.” (Romans 8:28)

Active Responses While We Wait

• Keep obeying the last clear instruction God gave, just as Moses returned to Pharaoh again (Exodus 7:1-2).

• Speak honestly but reverently to the Lord; He welcomed Moses’ lament.

• Feed on Scripture that reinforces hope (Psalm 27:14; Habakkuk 2:3).

• Encourage fellow believers; shared testimony strengthens resolve (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Serve faithfully where you are—“in due time we will reap … if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

Recognizing God at Work Even When Unseen

• Delayed deliverance often precedes dramatic intervention (Red Sea, Exodus 14).

• Each setback becomes a stage on which God showcases His supremacy over false powers (plagues in Egypt).

• What looks like stagnation can be preparation; Israel learned to trust the LORD rather than Pharaoh’s whims.

Fruit Produced by Faithful Waiting

• Deeper trust and stability of heart.

• Tested, proven faith that glorifies God (1 Peter 1:6-7).

• Testimony that strengthens future generations.

Encouragement for Today

• “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.” (Psalm 27:14)

• “Though it lingers, wait for it; since it will surely come and will not delay.” (Habakkuk 2:3)

God’s promises are never late; they arrive on the exact day He marked on His eternal calendar. Stand firm, keep serving, and watch Him fulfill every word.
