Responding to God's warnings?
How should we respond to God's warnings, as demonstrated in 1 Kings 14:5?

The Scene in 1 Kings 14:5

“ ‘Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is sick. You are to say such and such to her. When she arrives, she will be disguised.’ ”

Jeroboam’s house is in sin. God graciously warns through His prophet Ahijah, even revealing the queen’s disguise. In this single verse we already see how God speaks plainly, knows every hidden thing, and expects a response.

Key Lessons from the Verse

• God warns before He judges; His mercy always precedes His discipline.

• Nothing is concealed from Him—He exposes masks and motives alike.

• The content is specific (“such and such”) and demands obedience from the messenger and repentance from the hearer.

Right Responses to God’s Warnings

1. Listen attentively

– “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).

2. Take them personally

– They are meant for you, not just “someone else.”

3. Act immediately

– Delayed obedience is disobedience (Proverbs 13:13).

4. Repent sincerely

– God’s warnings are an invitation to turn and live (Ezekiel 33:11).

5. Obey completely

– Ahijah must say exactly what God commands; selective obedience fails (James 1:22).

6. Trust God’s knowledge

– He sees the disguise; we cannot hide. Honesty before Him is the only safe posture (Psalm 139:1–4).

Consequences of Ignoring the Warning (seen later in the chapter)

• The child dies (v. 17).

• Jeroboam’s dynasty is cut off (v. 10–11).

• Israel is shaken (v. 15–16).

What God foretells, He fulfills—every time.

Practical Ways to Heed God Today

• Read Scripture daily; that is where His warnings and promises reside (2 Timothy 3:16).

• Invite the Holy Spirit to convict quickly (John 16:8).

• Seek counsel from faithful believers when conviction comes (Proverbs 11:14).

• Remove any “disguises”—be transparent with God and others (1 John 1:7).

• Replace sin with righteous action—“produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8).

Scriptural Encouragement for Obedient Response

Matthew 7:24 – “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Acts 17:30 – “God now commands all people everywhere to repent.”

Revelation 3:19 – “Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent.”

Summary

When God speaks a warning—as He did through Ahijah—our duty is clear: hear it, own it, act on it, and reform our ways at once. Listening, repentance, and wholehearted obedience transform a warning from looming judgment into a doorway of mercy.
