Responding to faith mockery?
How can we respond to mockery for our faith, as seen in Matthew 27:29?

Jesus Endures Mockery: Matthew 27:29

“And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand, and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ ”

What We Learn from His Response

• Silent strength (Matthew 27:12): He “gave no answer,” showing self-control.

• No retaliation (1 Peter 2:23): “He did not retaliate … but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.”

• Unwavering purpose: the mockery could not derail His mission to redeem.

• Forgiving heart (Luke 23:34): “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Expect and Prepare for Mockery

• Normal for believers (2 Timothy 3:12).

• Foretold by Jesus (John 15:18-19).

• Cause for blessing, not shame (Matthew 5:11-12; 1 Peter 4:14).

How to Respond in the Moment

• Remain calm and courteous—self-control is a testimony.

• Speak with grace and wisdom (Colossians 4:5-6).

• Bless, don’t curse (Romans 12:14).

• Keep doing good; let actions silence ignorance (1 Peter 2:15).

• Pray for your mockers, following Jesus’ example.

• Refuse revenge; overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

The Lord’s Promises to Those Mocked

• His Spirit rests on you (1 Peter 4:14).

• Present comfort and future reward (Matthew 5:12).

• Ultimate vindication—He judges justly (1 Peter 2:23).

Putting It into Practice This Week

• Memorize Matthew 5:11-12 to anchor your heart.

• When a sarcastic comment comes, pause, breathe, answer softly.

• Pray daily for someone who has belittled your faith.

• Intentionally perform an act of kindness toward a critic.

• Share Jesus’ forgiving response (Luke 23:34) with a fellow believer for mutual encouragement.
