Romans 6:2: Live apart from sin?
How does Romans 6:2 challenge us to live differently from the world?

The Heart of the Verse: Our Death to Sin

“Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?” (Romans 6:2)

• Scripture declares a literal, once-for-all death to sin that happened the moment we were united with Christ.

• A dead relationship is final; the believer’s past union with the power of sin is severed just as surely as Christ’s body lay lifeless in the tomb.

• Because this death is real, any return to the old life is a denial of what God has already done in us.

Dead People Don’t Practice the Old Ways

• A corpse feels no pull, no craving, no attraction—sin’s seduction is broken.

• Worldly patterns—self-promotion, impurity, bitterness, materialism—no longer fit who we are.

• Persisting in them would be like dressing a freed slave in chains again (Galatians 5:1).

Living “Alive to God” Puts Distance from the World

• The same passage explains the positive side: “count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11).

• “Alive to God” means our affections, priorities, and goals now orbit around God’s glory, not society’s applause (Colossians 3:1-4).

• The gap between a believer and the world widens naturally when Christ is central—light and darkness can’t mingle (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

Daily Choices That Mark the Difference

• Mind—filter entertainment, conversations, and ambitions through “whatever is pure” (Philippians 4:8).

• Mouth—speak grace, truth, and thanksgiving instead of gossip or crude humor (Ephesians 4:29).

• Body—offer every member as an instrument of righteousness, not for lust or laziness (Romans 6:13).

• Time—seek first the kingdom with worship, service, and evangelism instead of endless self-indulgence (Matthew 6:33).

Backup From the Rest of Scripture

Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

Ephesians 4:22-24: put off the old self, be renewed, put on the new self.

1 Peter 1:15-16: be holy in all conduct because God is holy.

1 John 2:15-17: do not love the world or its desires; they are passing away.

Keeping the Perspective Fresh

• Remember the cross daily—Christ’s literal death secured yours to sin.

• Celebrate the resurrection—His life empowers your new walk.

• Rely on the Spirit—He keeps the old man buried and the new man vibrant (Galatians 5:16).

• Stay in fellowship—accountability and encouragement guard against drift (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Romans 6:2 refuses to let believers blend in: if we are truly dead to sin, our lives must look unmistakably different from the world that still lives for it.
