Spotting modern "detestable images"?
How can we identify modern "detestable images" in our lives?

Setting the Scene

Ezekiel 20:7 – “Then I said to them: ‘Each of you, throw away the detestable images that draw your eyes, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.’ ”

Old Testament Warning: Detestable Images

• Israel’s exiles cherished physical idols and carved wall art (Ezekiel 8:10).

• God called such objects “detestable” (Hebrew: “sheqets”)—repulsive, filthy, spiritually toxic.

• The heart issue, not merely the stone or metal, made them offensive (Ezekiel 14:3).

What Makes an Image Detestable?

• It displaces God’s rightful rule (Exodus 20:3-4).

• It captures affection or trust God alone deserves (Deuteronomy 6:5).

• It tempts us to imitate the world’s sin patterns (Romans 12:2).

• It invites demonic influence (1 Corinthians 10:19-21).

Modern Equivalents Around Us

Think beyond statues: any picture, platform, or pursuit absorbing worshipful attention can qualify. Examples:

• Screens & streams – binge-watching, explicit media, social-media vanity.

• Celebrity culture – athletes, musicians, influencers “followed” with devotion.

• Money symbols – brand logos, investment apps, crypto dashboards that stir greed.

• Self-image – gym mirror, selfie camera, body-perfection ads breeding obsession.

• Political icons – flags, slogans, personalities elevated to savior status.

• Hobby shrines – sports memorabilia, gaming rigs, crafts consuming Sabbath hours.

• Religious trinkets – crosses, icons, even church programs trusted more than Christ.

Spotting Them in Our Hearts

Ask:

• What dominates my thoughts upon waking and lying down? (Psalm 63:6)

• Where do my finances flow effortlessly? (Matthew 6:21)

• What loss would feel like life’s collapse? (Job 1:21)

• What stirs stronger emotions than worship—rage, ecstasy, fear? (Philippians 3:19)

• What do I rationalize that Scripture condemns? (James 1:22)

If an item, activity, or figure consistently answers those questions, it likely functions as a detestable image.

Steps to Clear Them Out

• Confess specifically—name the idol before God (1 John 1:9).

• Physically remove or restrict access where possible (Acts 19:18-20).

• Replace with Christ-centered practices—Word, prayer, fellowship (Psalm 119:11).

• Redirect tangible resources—time, talent, treasure—to God’s kingdom (Matthew 6:33).

• Cultivate gratitude; idols thrive in discontent (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

• Invite accountability from mature believers (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Living Free and Focused on Christ

Colossians 3:5 – “Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.”

Deliverance from modern detestable images is not merely subtraction but glorious replacement—setting eyes on “Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Keep Him enthroned, and every counterfeit loses its grip.
