Steps for spiritual direction?
What practical steps can we take when feeling spiritually directionless like in Psalm 74:9?

Facing the Silence of Psalm 74:9

“ ‘There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer any prophet, and none of us knows how long this will last.’ ”

Recognize the Moment

• Admit the feeling of disorientation; Scripture records it without shame.

• Understand that God’s people have faced such seasons before (1 Samuel 3:1; Amos 8:11).

Remember God’s Mighty Deeds

• Read aloud the rest of Psalm 74 (vv. 12-17) which recounts creation and redemption.

• Also revisit:

Psalm 77:11-12 “ ‘I will remember the works of the LORD…’ ”

Deuteronomy 6:12 “Be careful not to forget the LORD…”

• Keep a written list of past personal answers to prayer and providences.

Re-anchor in the Word

• Daily, systematic reading—start with a Gospel, a Psalm, and an Epistle section.

• Memorize promises that speak to guidance:

Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.”

Proverbs 3:5-6.

• Use Scripture to interpret feelings rather than feelings to interpret Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Return to Corporate Worship

• Prioritize gathered worship even when emotions lag (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Sing doctrinally rich hymns and psalms that recount God’s character (Colossians 3:16).

• Receive preaching as God’s present prophetic voice through His written Word.

Seek God-Fearing Counsel

• Approach mature believers or elders for insight (Proverbs 11:14).

• Share your situation honestly; invite accountability and prayer support.

• Test counsel by Scripture, not preferences (Acts 17:11).

Commit to Obedient Action

• Carry out the next clear command you already know: forgive, serve, give, testify (James 1:22-25).

• Direction often clarifies while walking in known light (John 7:17).

Keep Watch and Wait with Hope

• Like Habakkuk, “I will stand at my guard post” (Habakkuk 2:1).

• Journal impressions; measure them against Scripture before acting.

• Rest in the assurance: Isaiah 40:31 “Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength.”

Summary Steps List

1. Acknowledge the dryness.

2. Recall God’s historic faithfulness.

3. Immerse yourself in daily Scripture.

4. Engage regularly with the gathered church.

5. Invite wise, biblical counsel.

6. Obey the light you already have.

7. Watch and wait expectantly for God’s renewed direction.

He who was faithful to speak before will speak again; stay rooted until His appointed sign arrives.
