Stop false teachings in church?
How can we "silence" false teachers in our church community today?

The Foundational Command

Titus 1:11 — ‘They must be silenced, for they are disrupting entire households by teaching things they should not teach, and that for the sake of dishonest gain.’ ”

Recognize the Counterfeit

• Measure every teaching against the whole counsel of Scripture (Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:16–17).

• Watch for common markers Paul identifies: self-interest (Titus 1:11), denial of key doctrines (2 Peter 2:1), and divisive manipulation (Romans 16:17–18).

• Encourage the congregation to test the spirits (1 John 4:1).

Ground Ourselves in Sound Doctrine

• Prioritize expository, verse-by-verse preaching that lets the text speak for itself (Nehemiah 8:8).

• Equip every believer with basic doctrinal foundations—creation, fall, redemption, consummation—so error is obvious when it appears (Ephesians 4:11–15).

Equip Qualified Shepherds

• Elders must meet Titus 1:6–9 standards: above reproach, able to “encourage others with sound doctrine and refute those who contradict it” (v. 9).

• Regular elder training: sharpen biblical languages, theology, and pastoral care skills so oversight stays strong (Acts 20:28–31).

Apply Loving but Firm Confrontation

• Private correction first (Matthew 18:15).

• If unrepentant, bring one or two witnesses (v. 16).

• Persistent error goes before the church; public rebuke protects the flock (1 Timothy 5:20; Titus 1:13).

• Goal: restoration where possible (Galatians 6:1), removal when necessary (Romans 16:17).

Guard the Pulpit and Platforms

• Vet guest speakers, teachers, worship leaders. No microphone without doctrinal agreement (2 John 10–11).

• Provide clear doctrinal statements for every ministry.

• Monitor small-group materials; supply biblically faithful resources.

Empower Discernment in the Body

• Offer classes on hermeneutics and theology.

• Promote daily Bible reading plans so Scripture familiarity grows (Psalm 119:11).

• Share book recommendations that expose common modern errors.

Practice Church Discipline With Restoration in View

• Step-by-step process outlined in Corinthians: remove leaven so the church remains pure (1 Corinthians 5:6–13).

• Reinstate repentant teachers once fruit of repentance is evident (2 Corinthians 2:6–8).

Cultivate a Culture Saturated in Truth

• Commit Scripture to memory together (Colossians 3:16).

• Sing songs rich in theology.

• Celebrate testimonies that highlight the power of God’s true gospel (Romans 1:16).

Faithful obedience to Titus 1:11 keeps the church a pillar and foundation of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15), silencing error and amplifying the life-giving voice of God’s Word.
