Symbolism of darkened eyes, avoid blindness?
What does "darkened eyes" symbolize, and how can we avoid spiritual blindness?

Setting the Text in View

“May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.” (Psalm 69:23; echoed in Romans 11:10)

What “Darkened Eyes” Symbolize

• Loss of spiritual perception—unable to recognize God’s truth (2 Corinthians 4:4)

• Self–inflicted hardness of heart—persistent refusal to repent leads to God’s judicial hardening (Romans 11:8–10)

• Alienation from God’s life—cut off from the light that illuminates the mind (Ephesians 4:18)

• Moral confusion—calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20)

• Impending judgment—blindness is both a symptom and a warning of coming discipline (John 12:39–40)

Roots of Spiritual Blindness

1. Unbelief—choosing darkness over light (John 3:19–20)

2. Pride—claiming sufficiency apart from God (Revelation 3:17)

3. Idolatry—trusting anything more than the Lord (Psalm 115:4–8)

4. Sin’s hardening effect—continued rebellion dulls conscience (Hebrews 3:13)

How to Avoid Spiritual Blindness

• Receive the Light—come to Christ in repentance and faith (John 8:12)

• Abide in Scripture—regular, obedient intake of the Word “gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130)

• Depend on the Spirit—He “guides you into all truth” (John 16:13); sensitivity to His conviction keeps vision clear

• Walk in Obedience—light obeyed brings more light; light resisted dims current vision (James 1:22–25)

• Practice Humility—“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5); humility keeps eyes open

• Stay in Fellowship—mutual exhortation prevents hardening (Hebrews 10:24–25)

• Guard the Heart—reject influences that dull spiritual senses (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 6:22–23)

The Promise of Restored Sight

Jesus offers Laodicea—and us—“salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see” (Revelation 3:18). When we turn to Him, “the veil is removed” and we behold His glory “with unveiled faces” (2 Corinthians 3:16, 18).

How can Psalm 69:23 guide us in praying for spiritual discernment today?
