Today's sacrifices for following Jesus?
What sacrifices might we face today when choosing to follow Jesus wholeheartedly?

Setting the Scene

Matthew 8:19–20 records, “And a scribe came to Him and said, ‘Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.’ Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.’”

Jesus’ response is gentle yet sobering: discipleship costs. The scribe’s enthusiasm is welcomed, but Christ immediately clarifies the real-world sacrifices that accompany wholehearted allegiance.

Core Principle: Following Jesus Means Real Cost

Luke 14:27: “Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.”

Philippians 3:7-8: “Whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ… that I may gain Christ.”

Scripture never hides the price tag. Every generation of believers must weigh what we surrender for superior treasure in Christ.

Potential Sacrifices We Face Today

• Comfort & Convenience

– Like Jesus’ homelessness in Matthew 8:20, we may relinquish predictable routines, choose hard places, or accept simpler living to obey God’s call.

• Financial Security

Acts 2:45; 2 Corinthians 9:7 show believers giving generously. Choosing integrity at work, tithing faithfully, or supporting missions may reduce disposable income—but enlarges eternal reward (Matthew 6:19-21).

• Social Acceptance

John 15:19: “Because you are not of the world… the world hates you.” Expect ridicule for biblical convictions on marriage, life, and truth.

• Family Expectations

Matthew 10:37: “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me.” When loved ones oppose our obedience, loyalty to Jesus remains first.

• Personal Dreams & Career Plans

– James and John dropped nets immediately (Matthew 4:21-22). God may redirect careers, locations, or timelines to align with His kingdom purposes.

• Moral Autonomy

Romans 12:1 calls for presenting our bodies “as a living sacrifice.” Following Jesus means surrendering habits, entertainment, and desires that conflict with holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16).

• Time & Priorities

Ephesians 5:16 urges us to “redeem the time.” Serving the local church, discipling others, and pursuing prayer often crowd out leisure.

• Physical Safety & Freedom

2 Timothy 3:12: “All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” In many regions believers still risk jobs, liberty, or life itself for Christ’s name.

How Jesus Models and Rewards Sacrifice

Hebrews 12:2: “For the joy set before Him He endured the cross.”

Mark 10:29-30: “No one who has left house… for My sake… will fail to receive a hundredfold… and in the age to come eternal life.”

The Lord who gave everything promises multiplied, lasting joy to all who follow His path of costly love.

Encouragement to Count the Cost and Press On

Sacrifice is not loss but strategic investment in what cannot perish (1 Peter 1:4-5). Like the scribe, we declare, “I will follow You wherever You go,” trusting the One who traded heaven’s throne for our salvation will never shortchange His disciples.

Compare the scribe's approach in Matthew 8:19 with other disciples' calls in Scripture.
