Trust God's justice amid evil?
How can we trust God's justice when evil seems to prevail, as in Habakkuk?

Setting the Scene

• Habakkuk watches ruthless invaders sweeping through Judah.

• Verse 1:15 pictures them like fishermen:

“They haul them all up with a hook; they catch them in their net and gather them in their dragnet. So they rejoice and celebrate.”

• To Habakkuk, it looks as if might makes right and God is silent.

Why This Image Stings

• Hooks, nets, dragnets—tools meant for fish—are used on people.

• The wicked “rejoice and celebrate” over their cruelty.

• The scene raises the timeless cry: “Where is God’s justice?”

Anchoring Our Trust in God’s Justice

1. God sees every act.

Proverbs 15:3—“The eyes of the LORD are in every place, observing the evil and the good.”

• Nothing in the invaders’ nets escapes His notice.

2. God sets an appointed time for judgment.

Habakkuk 2:3—“For the vision awaits an appointed time… though it lingers, wait for it; it will surely come and will not delay.”

• Delay is not denial; it is purposeful timing.

3. God’s character guarantees justice.

Psalm 89:14—“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.”

• If His throne rests on justice, injustice cannot stand forever.

4. God ultimately repays evil.

Romans 12:19—“Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”

Revelation 20:12 shows every deed opened before Him.

How Habakkuk Moves from Question to Confidence

• 1:2–4 – He complains.

• 2:1 – He stations himself to watch and listen.

• 2:4 – He hears, “the righteous will live by his faith.”

• 3:17-19 – He rejoices in the LORD even before circumstances change.

Lessons for Today

• Ask honest questions; God welcomes them as He did Habakkuk’s.

• Measure reality by God’s promises, not by headlines.

• Live faithfully while you wait; obedience is active trust.

• Let future justice free you from personal revenge.

Other Scriptures Echoing the Same Assurance

Psalm 37:1-2, 7-10 – Evildoers fade like grass.

Psalm 73 – The prosperity of the wicked is temporary; their end is sudden.

Isaiah 30:18 – “The LORD longs to be gracious… He rises to show compassion.”

2 Peter 3:9-10 – God’s patience means salvation; His day will still come.

Walking Forward

Evil may appear to thrive, but Habakkuk reminds us that God’s justice is neither asleep nor weak. Like the prophet, we watch, wait, and live by faith, confident that the same Lord who recorded every hook and net will one day set all things right.

What emotions might Habakkuk feel witnessing the 'wicked' prosper in Habakkuk 1:15?
