How can we trust God's promises in our own lives today? Setting the scene David has just heard the LORD’s stunning covenant: an eternal throne for his line (2 Samuel 7:12-16). Overwhelmed, he replies: “And yet this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD. For You have spoken about the future of Your servant’s house. Is this the custom of man, O Lord GOD?” (2 Samuel 7:19) David recognizes two truths: • What feels enormous to us is “a small thing” for God. • God’s promises reach farther than any human custom. Why this promise to David still matters • The covenant points directly to Jesus, “the Son of David” (Matthew 1:1) whose kingdom never ends (Luke 1:32-33). • Because it was fulfilled literally in Christ, it proves God keeps every word He speaks. • David’s experience becomes “instruction for mankind” (alternate rendering of v. 19), teaching us how to rest in God’s character. Four solid reasons we can trust God’s promises today 1. God’s nature is unchanging • “God is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19). 2. God’s track record is flawless • “Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; everything was fulfilled” (Joshua 21:45). 3. Every promise finds its ‘Yes’ in Christ • “For all the promises of God are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20). 4. God seals His word with covenant, not convenience • “I will not violate My covenant or alter the utterance of My lips” (Psalm 89:34). How to anchor daily life in His promises • Read promises in context, just as David heard his. • Speak them aloud; David answered God verbally. • Personalize them without twisting them—apply them as God intends. • Recall specific fulfillments you’ve already seen; this builds faith for the next step. • Thank God in advance; gratitude fuels trust. Key promises worth gripping tightly • Presence – “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). • Guidance – “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go” (Psalm 32:8). • Strength – “Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). • Provision – “My God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). • Peace – “You will keep in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3). • Future – “I know the plans I have for you… plans for welfare and not for calamity” (Jeremiah 29:11). Living it out today Take David’s posture: sit before the LORD, rehearse what He’s done, and confess that even the biggest needs in your life are “a small thing” for Him. As you do, His unbreakable promises move from ink on a page to iron in your soul. |
