Trusting God's timing amid delays?
How can we trust God's timing when promises seem delayed, as in Genesis 15:2?

Abram’s Honest Question

“ But Abram replied, ‘Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ ” (Genesis 15:2)

Why Delays Test the Heart

• God had already promised Abram countless descendants (Genesis 12:2; 13:16), yet years passed with no child.

• Delay exposes whether we trust the Giver or the gifts.

• It invites us to bring raw emotions to the Lord, just as David did: “How long, O LORD?” (Psalm 13:1–2).

• The waiting room becomes the classroom where faith matures (James 1:3–4).

Solid Reasons to Trust God’s Timing

• His character is flawless—“God is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19).

• His timing is purposeful—“The vision awaits an appointed time… though it delays, wait for it” (Habakkuk 2:3).

• He sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:9–10).

• Delay never means forgetfulness—“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness” (2 Peter 3:9).

• Fulfillment often arrives at the perfect hinge point of history—“When the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son” (Galatians 4:4).

Lessons from Abraham’s Journey

1. Faith wrestles yet still believes (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:19–21).

2. God reaffirmed the promise with a covenant ceremony (Genesis 15:7–21), showing He stakes His own reputation on its fulfillment.

3. Years later, Isaac’s birth proved the wait was not wasted (Genesis 21:1–3; Hebrews 6:13–15).

Practices for Waiting Well

• Anchor daily in Scripture—read promises aloud (Psalm 119:49–50).

• Recall past faithfulness—keep a journal of answered prayers (1 Samuel 7:12).

• Pray honestly but keep worship central (Psalm 62:8; Habakkuk 3:17–19).

• Serve others while you wait (Galatians 6:9–10).

• Surround yourself with believers who encourage steadfastness (Hebrews 10:23–25).

• Surrender the timetable—“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7).

The Certainty Behind Every Promise

God sealed His promises to Abraham—and to us—through the cross and resurrection. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Trusting His timing is ultimately trusting His Son, who guarantees the inheritance that once seemed impossibly delayed.

Connect Genesis 15:2 with God's covenant promises in Genesis 12:1-3.
