Trusting God's ways in tough times?
How can we trust God's methods when facing overwhelming challenges in life?

Setting the Scene

Deuteronomy 7 finds Israel on the brink of Canaan, staring at nations “greater and stronger” (v. 1). Humanly impossible odds. Yet verse 20 promises:

“Moreover, the LORD your God will send the hornet against them until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish.”

Seeing the Hornet Principle

• A hornet is tiny, but God wields it as a precision weapon.

• Israel’s task: believe, advance, and obey; God’s task: dislodge the enemy by unexpected means.

• The pattern repeats:

Exodus 23:28 “I will send the hornets ahead of you…”

Joshua 24:12 “It was not by your sword or bow.”

Judges 7: Gideon’s 300 men win with torches and trumpets.

Why God’s Unconventional Methods Inspire Trust

• They magnify His sovereignty. “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” (1 Corinthians 1:27)

• They protect us from pride. “So no one may boast in His presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:29)

• They remind us His thoughts are higher. “My ways are higher than your ways.” (Isaiah 55:9)

• They guarantee His glory. When victory looks impossible, everyone knows who did it.

How to Cultivate Confidence in God’s Ways Today

1. Rehearse past deliverances

– List personal “hornet moments” when a small, unlikely detail turned the tide.

2. Anchor the heart in Scripture

Psalm 20:7 “Some trust in chariots… but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.”

Romans 8:31 “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

3. Obey the next step you know

– Israel still marched forward; Gideon still blew the trumpet. Trust grows in motion.

4. Pray for spiritual eyesight

2 Kings 6:17 Elisha’s servant had to see the unseen armies; ask God to open your eyes to His hidden work.

5. Wait without panic

– 2 Chron 20:17 “Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD.”

Remembering the Ultimate Example

The cross looked like defeat, but God used a rugged tree to conquer sin and death. What appeared weak became the power of God for salvation (1 Corinthians 1:18). If He turned the darkest Friday into eternal victory, He can surely send a “hornet” into today’s overwhelming challenge.

What role do 'hornets' play in God's plan for Israel's victory?
