What are God's law's wondrous things?
What are "wondrous things" in God's law that we should seek to understand?

A Heartfelt Cry

“Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things from Your law.” (Psalm 119:18)

David assumes the wonders are already present; the need lies in our seeing.

What Makes These Things “Wondrous”?

- They spring from God’s own character—holy, righteous, good (Romans 7:12).

- They never fade or fail (Isaiah 40:8).

- They unite history, prophecy, wisdom, and gospel into one seamless revelation (Luke 24:27).

- They accomplish supernatural work in us—reviving, warning, rejoicing (Psalm 19:7-11).

Specific Wondrous Things in God’s Law

- God’s creative power

- Genesis 1–2 shows a spoken universe, confirming Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”

- God’s covenant faithfulness

- The rainbow pledge (Genesis 9:13-17) and Abrahamic oath (Genesis 15) reveal an unbreakable promise-keeping nature.

- The revelation of atonement

- Leviticus 17:11, “the life of the flesh is in the blood,” prefigures the cross (Hebrews 9:22).

- The call to holiness

- Leviticus 19:2, “Be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy,” explains why moral commands remain weighty (1 Peter 1:15-16).

- Prophetic portraits of Messiah

- Genesis 3:15 (first gospel), Numbers 24:17 (star from Jacob), Deuteronomy 18:15 (prophet like Moses) all converge in Jesus (Acts 3:22-24).

- Wisdom that orders life

- Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) protect worship, life, family, purity, property, and truth.

- Deuteronomy’s repeated “that it may go well with you” (e.g., 5:29) shows obedience yields blessing.

- Comfort for the sufferer

- Psalm 119 itself overflows with hope amid affliction (vv. 50, 92).

- Ultimate redemption

- The Passover lamb (Exodus 12) foreshadows “Christ, our Passover” sacrificed for us (1 Corinthians 5:7).

How These Wonders Point to Christ

- The law is a guardian leading us to Messiah (Galatians 3:24).

- Shadows become substance in Him (Colossians 2:16-17).

- Every sacrifice anticipates His once-for-all offering (Hebrews 10:1-12).

- Every moral statute is fulfilled and elevated by His indwelling Spirit (Romans 8:3-4).

Responding to the Wonders

- Read expectantly: trust the Spirit to open blind eyes (1 Corinthians 2:10-12).

- Meditate persistently: let Scripture dwell richly, not casually (Psalm 1:2; Colossians 3:16).

- Obey immediately: “The one who looks into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues in it…will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25).

- Share joyfully: declare His statutes “before kings” without shame (Psalm 119:46).

These “wondrous things” are not hidden riddles but living truths that reveal God’s heart, point to His Son, and transform His people.
