What does ""I am certain"" show?
What does "I am certain" reveal about the psalmist's trust in God?

Setting the Scene

Psalm 27 overflows with bold declarations of confidence in the LORD. By verse 13, David has rehearsed dangers, enemies, and waiting seasons—and yet he breaks in with:

“Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13)

What “I Am Certain” Says about David’s Trust

• Unshakable assurance – The verb points to a fixed, settled conviction, not a passing feeling. David is not crossing his fingers; he is staking his life on God’s character.

• Expectation of tangible rescue – “In the land of the living” shows he anticipates God’s goodness now, not only after death.

• Confidence anchored in prior experience – Earlier verses recount God’s past protection (vv. 1–3). His certainty is rooted in memory of real interventions.

• Active faith, not passive resignation – The certainty fuels courage and persistence (v. 14 “Wait for the LORD; be strong”).

Building Blocks of Such Certainty

1. God’s revealed nature

Psalm 27:1 “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Exodus 34:6 “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious…”

2. God’s unbroken track record

1 Samuel 17:37 “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion… will deliver me…”

3. God’s unfailing promises

Isaiah 40:31 “Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength…”

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.”

Inviting the Same Certainty Today

– Remember specific instances where God has shown you His goodness.

– Meditate on passages that highlight His character (e.g., Psalm 103).

– Speak biblical truth over present circumstances, just as David did.

– Choose expectant waiting, trusting that you too will “see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”
