What does Jesus' position signify?
What does Jesus' position "at the right hand of God" signify for believers?

Opening Verse

“After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.” — Mark 16:19

What “the right hand of God” meant to first-century readers

• Position of highest honor and authority in an ancient throne room

• Seat reserved for the king’s confidant who shared in royal rule and executed the monarch’s will

• Place of security—no enemy could approach from that side without first crossing the king himself

Why this matters for every believer

• Christ’s supreme authority is settled

Matthew 28:18: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

– Because His rule is unchallengeable, His promises to us stand firm.

• His saving work is finished

Hebrews 10:12: “But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God.”

– No further payment is needed; our forgiveness is complete.

• Constant intercession on our behalf

Romans 8:34: “Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is interceding for us.”

– Our Advocate never sleeps, guaranteeing the ongoing application of grace.

• Shared victory and new identity

Ephesians 2:6: “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”

– Spiritually, believers are already included in His triumph and share His royal status.

• Unshakable hope in suffering

Hebrews 12:2: “For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

– His exaltation proves that present trials will end in glory for all who belong to Him.

• Promise of future reign

2 Timothy 2:12: “If we endure, we will also reign with Him.”

– The throne room scene previews the believer’s eternal vocation.

Living it out today

• Approach God confidently; the King’s right-hand Advocate has opened the way (Hebrews 4:16).

• Rest from trying to earn acceptance; the finished work is already acknowledged in heaven.

• Pray with assurance that your petitions are carried by the One seated in authority.

• Stand firm against fear; every power is subject to the enthroned Christ (1 Peter 3:22).

• Walk in victory over sin; the same power that seated Christ now works in you (Ephesians 1:19-20).
