What does Lamentations 3:24 mean?
What is the meaning of Lamentations 3:24?

The LORD

• Scripture names Him “the LORD”—the covenant-keeping God who never changes (Exodus 3:14: “I AM WHO I AM”).

• Jeremiah centers the entire verse on God’s character, not on circumstances. When the prophet earlier said, “Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me” (Lamentations 3:20), he moves now to the unfailing One.

Psalm 18:2 echoes the same confidence: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.”

is my portion

• “Portion” speaks of inheritance and sufficiency; the Levites heard the same assurance: “You shall have no inheritance in the land, nor shall you have any portion among them; I am your portion” (Numbers 18:20).

• When physical assets crumble, the believer still owns the richest treasure—God Himself.

• Additional echoes:

Psalm 16:5: “The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup.”

Psalm 73:26: “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

says my soul

• This is more than an outward motto; it is an inward declaration.

• Jeremiah’s soul, bruised by Jerusalem’s fall, still testifies. Like the psalmist who talks to himself—“Why are you downcast, O my soul?… Put your hope in God” (Psalm 42:11)—the prophet speaks faith to his own heart.

• Genuine assurance must travel from head to heart; the soul must own it personally.

therefore I will hope

• Hope is the logical outcome when the LORD is the portion; anything less would contradict His nature.

• Jeremiah’s choice: “I WILL hope”—a deliberate act of trust, even before relief arrives.

• Scripture reinforces this pattern:

Jeremiah 17:7: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.”

Romans 5:5: “Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts.”

in Him

• The preposition matters. Hope is not in plans, people, or possessions but “in Him.”

Hebrews 6:19 pictures the outcome: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and steadfast.”

• Because the Lord Himself is the anchor, hope holds even when waves crash.

summary

Jeremiah strings together five truths: the LORD—unchanging covenant God—is all the inheritance we need; the soul must claim this personally; therefore hope becomes a settled choice, fixed in Him alone. When we make the same confession, we trade fragile earthly securities for an anchor that never fails.
